My husband and I took the drive up the mountain and enjoyed the views, history and peacefulness. We both commented that it's too bad they don't offer any other attractions up there. Camping, concerts, events, etc would make a nice addition to this historical site. If you enjoy just looking out at the mountains and feeling the breeze then this place is for you. We only saw one family utilizing the picnic tables and had we known we would have brought our lunch. There is a $10 entrance fee.

I saw the good reviews for Prospect Mountain and was a bit suspicious. Why pay $10 just to drive up a mountain when there are so many good views in the ADK? I saw a youtube video and it was underwhelming. We decided to give it go since it seems to be a big thing to do in the Lake George region. Well it was much better than I expected. My wife and boys (8 and 10) loved it as well. It's about a 3.5 mile drive to the parking area on top. Along the way there are 4 pull offs to take in some views. Each stop was amazing; we got some good pix and some great views. Once at the top you have the option to take the shuttle van to the top or take a steep walk to the top (half mile or so?). We took the shuttle up but walked down. The views of the top are wonderful. I felt like the king of the world! From start to finish it took about 2 hours but we took our time; you could halve that if you're in a pinch. Here's a tip-you can miss the turn into the park because it's not at a light; I had it plugged into my gps but didn't trust it when I should have. I'd highly recommend Prospect Mountain.

Let me preface this by stating that me and the wife are pretty avid hikers and hike regularly throughout all four seasons and love discovering new places.
There is a trail that is easily accessible from Lake George Village, no fees at all, you just park your car in a residential area, take the walking bridge across I-87 and find yourself at the foot of this approximately 2,100 ft mountain.
We hiked it for the first time in August 2010, at that point we both were suffering from an acute respiratory tract infection and high fever but did not want to let this deter us from our vacation plans figuring the fresh air would do us some good. We were surprised to find that the mountain is quite steep in areas and the walking path consists largely of a stone surface or rocks of different sizes that can prove a risk for a twisted ankle if not paying attention or if uninitiated to hiking in the wilderness. Due to our illness, we found the mountain quite a challenge.
We recently hiked it again in July of 2011, and while it is rough in parts and a bit of a journey requiring about an hour an a half to get up to the scenic outlook, it should be quite easy for those with little to moderate hiking experience. If you are bringing young children make sure you have snacks and some water for them, also exercise caution if you have asthma or any type of heart condition as scaling some of the more rocky surface requires a degree of exertion.
One word of warning, we experienced a bit of a tense situation that early morning about two hundred feet from the summit on the way back down, I do not want to get into specifics but hotel staff confirmed the presence of black bears, mountain lions, cougars and rattlesnakes in the area though sightings are infrequent. A friend camping in nearby Pottersville also had an encounter several years ago so be careful and think twice about hiking up with very young children or dogs.
All in all, a very enjoyable way to spend a morning or afternoon if you are up to the task.

My husband and I wanted to do some light hiking while in the area and also see some of the great views. We picked Prospect Mountain due to it's ease of access and reasonable price. We paid about $10 to enter the park and then drove to the top. There are several lookout points along the way. We stopped at the first one and took advantage of the short hike there to the top of a ridge. The hike was fairly easy and only took about 15-20 min each way. The view from this point was worth the hike. There is a small sign highlighting this in the trees near the parking lot. We drove on and stopped at the other 2 points and then drove to the top. We decided to walk the trail to the summit instead of taking the shuttle van to get a bit more exercise. The shuttle runs every few minutes from the parking lot to the summit. Once at the top, we found a nice pavilion and picnic area that we would actually like to use on a return trip. The views were really great and we would definitely encourage everyone to make this trip if you are in the area.

probably the closest hike you can get from the village.

Easy manageable hike that you get rewarded with a view of the lake at the top.

The only not nice part is after hiking and sweating it out for 1.5 hours, you see people arriving in cars and get the same view! But enjoyable nonetheless.
