Known worldwide for its legendary sailing regatta, the seaport town of Cowes on the Isle of Wight has long been a favoured tourist destination with boat enthusiasts. Every year in early August the town plays host to Cowes Week, where hundreds of sailors from around the world compete in races across the Solent. The event draws in thousands of spectators - mainly from mainland England - and has a real festival feel about it.
Originally founded in 1991, Wightlink has been ferrying passengers to the Isle of Wight from the mainland for almost 30 years, winning several awards in the process. The company now operates three different routes - all from the south coast of England - with eight different vessels currently in action.
Undoubtedly Wightlink's most popular route is the Portsmouth to Fishbourne vehicle and passenger ferry, which includes the flagship Victoria of Wight vessel. The crossing takes around 45 minutes and can accommodate a variety of vehicles. Arguably Wightlink's most scenic route is the Lymington to Yarmouth crossing; offering truly breathtaking views over the Solent. This vehicle-friendly vessel is the shortest and quickest route between the mainland and the island.
If you don't plan on driving then the Portsmouth Harbour to Ryde Pier Head route is by far the quickest option, zipping you over the water in just 22 minutes! Fishbourne, Yarmouth and Ryde are all within easy travelling distance of Cowes (around 25 minutes by car), so whichever route you choose you could be sipping on a cold drink in Cowes' famous harbour within the hour!
