Detail of a khatchkar at the Sevanavank Monastery. The monastery of Sevan, which stands on what was once an island of the same name, can be dated to the 9th-10th centuries. For several hundred years, as an important spiritual centre, housing many monks, it was visited by thousands of pilgrims from all parts of Armenia. As it stands today, the monastic complex consists of two churches , one dedicated to St. Arakelots (the Holy Apostles), the other to St. Astvatzatzin (the Holy Mother of God)…

st.ammon hermit of nitria.. THIS great saint was born in Egypt of a rich and noble family. At the age of twenty-two years his tutors and trustees obliged him to marry, in the year 308; but, on the day of his marriage, he read to his wife what St. Paul has written in commendation of the holy state of virginity, by which she was easily persuaded to consent to their making a mutual vow of perpetual continence. They lived together eighteen years under the same roof in perfect continency;

Coptic art from the 13th through the 15th century is well preserved in the Church of St. Anthony. The church was built at the beginning of the thirteenth century and has remained almost completely unaltered since then. The original decorations were undertaken by Master Theodore around 1232 -1233, while another painter worked in the monastery sometime before 1436. He was known as the painter of the paschal cycle. The Characteristics of Coptic iconization follow certain symbolism that carries…

Unidentifiable warrior saint killing a dragon. Faras Cathedral (9th-10th century). He wears an armour in Byzantine style. It is hard to say if one can interpret this painting as a proof for linothorax armour in (early) Medieval Nubia or if the artist just copied the motive from a Byzantine painting. Also note the (for Nubians) unusual shield.

The 2 sides of Silence: How it Fosters or Breaks Relationships. ~ Carol Benson
Silence used to avoid a confrontation, or the discomfort of emotions arising, often becomes like a nagging upset that burrows into your day when you least expect it. There will be moments when someone says something, or you see something, that triggers your recall of the person giving you the silent treatment. And that hurts.

The Desert Fathers and Mothers were hermits, ascetics, and monks who lived mainly in the Scetes desert of Egypt beginning around the third century AD. The desert monastic communities that grew out of the informal gathering of hermit monks became the model for Christian monasticism. All of the monastic revivals of the Middle Ages looked to the desert for inspiration and guidance. This painting features "Saint Macarius and a Cherub" from The Holy Monastery of Saint Catherine, Sinai, Egypt.

Icon of Saints Sergius and Bacchus, with St. Justina - The figures are depicted in full length, treading on a three-headed dragon. This icon was painted by Michael Damaskenos (1535 - 1593) to commemorate the victory of the European forces against the Turks, in the naval battle of Naupactos in 1571. This Icon is at present in the Byzantine Museum of Panaghia Antivouniotissa, Kerkyra, Greece.

Religious fresco at Abreha We Atsbeha rock-hewn church - Gheralta Mountain, Tigray, Ethiopia
The two kings Abreha and Atsbeha founded this very beautiful church. The legend says that they built it at nights, coming by the cloud. This fresco shows another traditional legend where it is said that once a serpent-king, Arwe or Waynaba, ruled over the land, exacting a tributeof a young girl each year. It may be that the tale reflects memory of a serpent-cult in the region (the first rope of Debre Damo monestry was a snake in another legend too). Eventually a stranger, Angabo, arrived…
