Distance 22 km
Ascent 780 m
The route leads from La Coudre across the densely forested south-eastern slope up to Mt. Chaumont, the highest point of the tour on the front range of the Jura Mountains. Neuchâtel’s very own mountain offers the mountain bikers a panoramic view of the Three Lakes Region and the Alps.
First through the forest and then a single trail runs along the well-known Voëns golf course. This part of the trail is also used by hikers. The way up to the village of Enges passes close to the “Pierre des Polonais” monument. It was erected to honour the Polish soldiers held there during World War II. They did a variety of work for the village, including digging drainage ditches and renovating the chapel. The trail turns shortly before the village, high above the Swiss Mittelland, and offers beautiful views.
The trail continuously climbs up to Mt. Chaumont, always through the dense forest past fir, spruce and beech trees. Looking back at Lake Neuchâtel it becomes clear just how far up we have climbed. A stop on Mt. Chaumont, the highest point of the tour at 1100 m on the front range of the Jura Mountains, is rewarding, but make sure you climb the observation tower. It was built in 1912 after the completion of the funicular and looks like an eagle’s nest. The panoramic views range from the Three Lakes Region to the western part of the Mittelland with Lake Murten in the south and Lake Biel in the east. If the weather is clear, you might even see the Alps with Eiger, Mönch, Jungfrau and Mont Blanc. No wonder this spot is often crowded with people from Neuchâtel trying to get away from the fog.
And why not enjoy an adrenalin shot in the tree tops of the ropes park or sip a drink on the sun-drenched terrace before going back? The lovely path, alternating between dirt roads and single trails through the forest, takes the mountain bikers back to the starting point in La Coudre. There is also a funicular here going up to Neuchâtel’s local mountain in just 13 minutes.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
