Sat. July 24 - Bugs Bunny and Friends

BONE, SWEET BONE, FIESTA FIASCO, FISH AND SLIPS, CHARIOTS OF FUR, FROM HARE TO ETERNITY, BEANSTALK BUNNY, THE CAT'S BAH

(well, we're back to squeezing in 7 cartoons again!)

*Beanstalk Bunny (Bugs, Daffy, Elmer - 1955) - Chuck Jones' crack at the beanstalk bit, with Elmer as the obligatory giant. [appears not to be remastered]

*Bone, Sweet Bone (Misc. - 1948) - pre-Aug. 1948, this would have been a Blue Ribbon cartoon with titles removed, reissued 1/21/1956. Here's a Wikipedia paragraph:

The titles for "Bone Sweet Bone" are restored for TV, but has not been released on DVD. However, the original copy with the original titles has problems of its own, as split cuts in this copy cut out the ending lines from when the dog says, "If you think for a moment that this little incident is going to upset me--" then it cuts to him freaking out. The rest of his line, "you're absolutely right", is missing in the original title print. The Blue Ribbon print does not have these split-cuts.

I have the cartoon in bad quality with original titles without this problem at the end. So it will be interesting to see what it looks like now. [Well, it's back to Blue Ribbon. Evidently the original 35mm print with credits is MIA.]

*Fiesta Fiasco (Speedy and Daffy - 1967) - please, MeTV, give us some Speedys from the 50s!

Fish and Slips (Sylvester and Junior - 1962) - watch out, Sylvester, there's piranha in that tank--get yer tail outta thar!

*The Cat's Bah (Pepe Le Pew - 1954) - Pepe's back, egad!

Chariots of Fur (Road Runner - 1994) - haven't seen this one in awhile. May be first time on MeTV. Directed by Chuck Jones, there hadn't been a theatrical Road Runner since 1966. It preceded Richie Rich in theaters.

From Hare to Eternity (Bugs and Yosemite Sam, 1997) - well, this might be a first. Chuck Jones directing a short with Bugs and Sam. Might also be a MeTV debut.

*First time on MeTV

That's why I like the Saturday show so much better. They don't cut off the ending credits and for me the size is better.

I edit out the fish at the end and lose a second.

This is a quirk with some DVD recorders, like mine. If you cut where you want to cut, you lose a few seconds of the show. It shouldn't happen. But I've been dealing with it since 2005.

I have 3 Magnavox DVR/DVD recorders. If I cut and then record at regular speed, the cuts are exact. If I try to "Hi-Speed" record, those cuts become irregular and may go a split second either way. I just need that fish to be patient and wait til the toon is OVER. Advertising rules metv.

Yes, hi-speed dubbing causes me problems, too--I have a Panasonic recorder. If there are instances where I need an edit to look good, I always use "SP", not hi-speed.

So, using your example, I always leave some of the fish in; otherwise, I will cut off the end of the cartoon. At least on my local station, it's almost always all there--they just run it too "tight." There was that one day when they left a little dead air and it made my recording look perfect.

Advertising rules--they can't normally leave even a split second of "dead air." And it's not just MeTV--it's why Nick at Nite isn't innovative anymore. EVERYTHING has to be either an ad or a promo (oh, and [grumble, grumble from them]--the program)--no time for that clever stuff or dead air. They wouldn't even waste the time those bumpers take, were it not for some FCC requirement on kids' shows.
