MAYS LANDING - A 70 year-old Atlantic County man was sentenced Thursday for sexually assaulting a 12-year-old victim.

Jose A. Rodriguez faces up to 11½ years in a state facility for sex offenders, said the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office.

The Egg Harbor City man, who is a registered sex offender, was convicted at trial last year on two counts of sexual assault of a child under 13, the prosecutor's office said in a statement.

Rodriguez sexually assaulted his victim in August 2019, then gave her $10 and told her to keep the incident a secret "because he didn't want to get in trouble with police," the statement said.

The girl disclosed the assault to her mother that evening ad her family went to police, it said.

A jury also convicted Rodriguez of endangering the welfare of a child by sexual conduct and violating terms of community supervision for life, the prosecutor's office said.

The prosecutor's office noted Rodriguez was subject to parole conditions for a previous sex crime when he assaulted the girl.

"Rodriguez’s contact alone with a child put him in direct violation of his parole conditions," it said.

He was sentenced by Superior Court Judge Bernard Delury Jr. in Atlantic County.

Rodriguez is to serve his sentence at the state's Adult Diagnostic Treatment Facility in Avenel.
