Product Description
A haunting thriller set in an isolated castle in 1950s Tuscany, Voice From the Stone tells the story of Verena, a determined young nurse who is hired to help the mute young heir within. But the more she observes him, the more Verena becomes convinced he has fallen under the spell of a powerful and otherworldly persona trapped in the villa’s stone walls, one that seems to be rapidly entwining with her own.

Explores in a *fresh* interpretation of European 1950s vintage thriller style: "What is haunting? What is obsession? What is possession?" You keep thinking it's going to be one thing, but it's quite something else. And you don't see it until the last 2 shots.
I mean *fresh*, because there are, any given month, 20-100 B- and grindhouse horror film listings with great posters touting another "bad things like possession happen to good people who stay in evil buildings*. This is so different, I was grateful.
Great acting, breathtaking scenery on an ancient estate, Italy? Hungary? Real mist, real woods, REAL LABYRINTH --zero CGI!! and an ancient castle set in near-contemporary times, or possibly, 50s; hard to tell because it was a very remote country estate. Martin Csokas is a sculptor, a troubled father here; usually he's an archvillain. My favorite role so far is his suavely insane ex KGB officer out to get Denzel in "The Equalizer". It could be said, there's some borderline scenery chewing here. But again, this film is done in a compelling vintage Euro-thriller style that careens between emotional remove and torturous obsession. Judging from the early reviews here, this movie will probably be too highbrow for some. So one quick painful scene of slight overacting was, for me, forgiven, because Csokas' performance throughout was otherwise perfectly nuanced with a touch menace fronting an undercurrent of deliciously obsessive sensuality.
Very slow --also European-- pace. I almost gave up at about 40 minutes, but persisted to see if what was promised would be delivered: it was.
I love ghost stories so I am biased here but this was, for me, a welcome throw back to an older style horror movie (translate: for some, this will feel slow), it's atmosphere chilled me, and I cared, mostly, about it's characters.
That said, on your first passage through, there are some character choices surrounding the protagonist, as you get towards the end, that will tend to raise major hackles - however - my read is that the offending actions are there to demonstrate the character under SOMETHING's spell (as are the actions of other characters in the film). This is not necessarily understood on the first viewing and I think a mistake was to take this idea, in a very short period of story time, way too far. As such, there are some cringe worthy moments. That may have been enough for me to disavow this film if it weren't for the fact that I was enjoying everything else about it and because, ultimately, there is an explanation behind it all that (as far as ghost stories go) was something I found new and satisfying.
The setting is beautiful, as is the cinematography and the landscapes.
With it being close to Halloween, I was hoping for something spooky, beautiful, thought-provoking, and haunting.
There are a couple of scary bits, but I can count them on one hand, for the entire length of the film.
The actors in this do a great job of selling the characters and the story. It's the story (and probably the editing) that's the problem. The trailer might make you believe there's something sinister happening to the main character.
The movie will have you waiting, and waiting, and wondering when that thing will happen.
I love a good movie with a twist ending. Jacobs Ladder, the Sixth Sense, Shutter Island, The Number 23, etc.
These are all movies with a multitude of distractions and moving parts that took you on a journey, asked you to pay attention, and then surprised you with all of the little details you missed.
Voice From The Stone does not. The "tiny details" are in Bold Type and as plain as the nose on one's face.
Just in case you missed it, they allude to it in every way possible.
While the minimalistic simplicity and common themes help to make this a wonderful film to view, it does not help to digest a story that seems like it was written to surprise and 8 year old, and probably no one else.
It's not a horror film, nor a thriller, it's not even spooky...though spookier would have helped it a lot. -But that's not the route they went with it.
I'm giving this film two stars, because the actors do a great job, the cinematography, lighting, locations, and even the music complements the film well. Were it not for the horrible writing/of lack of planning of events in the story, this could be a great film.

was hired to help the boy recover from a tragedy and get him talking again. There are some unexpected twists in this story.
This was a quality horror movie, not a cheap, B budget movie. The only downside to this movie is that for the first 10 minutes or so, there are a lot of subtitles that you must read on the screen, but after that no subtitles are required. If you like horror movies, you will like one.
