Unstoppable

Critics Consensus

As fast, loud, and relentless as the train at the center of the story, Unstoppable is perfect popcorn entertainment -- and director Tony Scott's best movie in years.

Movie Info

When a massive, unmanned locomotive roars out of control, the threat is more ominous than just a derailment. The train is laden with toxic chemicals, and an accident would decimate human life and cause an environmental disaster. The only hope of bringing the train to a safe stop is in the hands of a veteran engineer (Denzel Washington) and a young conductor (Chris Pine), who must risk their lives to save those in the runaway's path. Inspired by true events.

Unstoppable is the kind of film that never sounds like it's going to be very exciting but after watching it you wonder why it took so long to watch it, It's gripping and action packed from start to finish, The plot is simple so it makes it easier to just enjoy the ride, Chris Pine and Denzel Washington worked very well with each other and I wouldn't mind seeing them on screen together again soon, Probably Tony Scotts best movie before his passing and long may it be remembered for that.

Tony Scott brings a true event to the big screen in the most tense and dramatic way possible. Unstoppable presents the typical-Scott-crazed direction along with a nerve-racking plot that gets you from start to finish, and not to mention Denzel and Chris' stellar duo. 4.5/5

Two train operators must stop a runaway train. The opening credits claim that this film is based on a true story, but there are moments that are so implausible that I thought Tony Scott was pulling a Coen Brothers' Fargo on me. Real or not, the film is exciting and fun and perfect for all of Scott's gimmicks -- his ever-moving camera, quick cuts, big (unrealistic) explosions, hyper-masculine dialogue. It's all predictable but enjoyable, much like 1994's Speed. Overall, this film is unsubstantial fun.

An exciting, suspenseful film. And it has Chris Pine. What more could you ask for?
