Underwater's strong cast and stylish direction aren't enough to distract from the strong sense of déjà vu provoked by this claustrophobic thriller's derivative story. Read critic reviews

"Last night I saw my Kristen making a bomb. Oo-oo-ee. Murky, murky, cheap, cheap!"

The Abyss meets Aliens with a bit of The Poseidon Adventure, a lot of Pacific Rim and a dash of The Meg in this subaquatic sci-fi that offers nothing more than the sum of its references.

The murky cinematography further hinders a picture that looks as though it was shot through raw sewage.

Jan 09, 2021I don't think I've ever seen a movie in which the action kickstarts in a big way within the first four minutes after the title sequence rolled. Underwater is a tightly wound, completely unbelievable monster movie that has a bonkers ending that probably made H.P. Lovecraft sit up in his grave and cheer.Mark B Super Reviewer

Jul 26, 2020A mostly passable "Alien" ripoff that does manage to mine enough effective tension from its premise. Stewart should do more action/horror movies.Alec B Super Reviewer

Jul 09, 2020If Alien was like a haunted house in space, then Underwater is a haunted house...underwater. People move about - in large spacesuits - through dark places with flashlights that never seem to work and plenty of loud noises from somewhere ("did you hear that?!?") for those all important set-up jumpscares. But all in all the work, despite location, goes over familiar territory (yet again) and offers nada different or fresh. Unless one is a Kristen Stewart fan.Kevin M. W Super Reviewer

Jun 18, 2020Kristen Stewart actually kind of pulls off carrying this thing, which was a surprise to me. I know a lot of people have really enjoyed her post-Twilight career, but I haven't really latched on to anything she's done. It feels pretty short, but not as short as it actually is at 95 minutes. The creatures were cool, I'm pretty sure. It was kind of hard to see. But for all its ups and downs I did basically enjoy Underwater, a solid mix of creepy monster, creepy environment, interspersed with tension-relieving dialogue. The only real problem is that it's very derivative. Not a massive issue in and of itself, the trouble is that it means every five minutes you think to yourself "Oh! This is just like X Movie (usually Alien)... I kinda wish I was watching that instead".Gimly M Super Reviewer
