Complete 1080P screenshots from A Bucket of Blood, an interesting early Roger Corman film. I've seen every Film Detective BD so far with Salt of the Earth being the lone exception.

The review is up for the new and improved Kansas City Confidential. Glad that these guys are correcting past mistakes.

Hoping to see Dementia 13, The Terror, The Strange Love of Martha Ivers, and The Red House all get improved releases in the near future as well.

Considering Film Chest and Film Detective appear to be the same one man operation, I'd love to know why he didn't carry over the trailer from the previous release? I love having original trailers as an extra. I have to check to see if the old MGM DVD release had the trailer. Then I would just hang onto that along with this new Blu, rather than keeping the DNR fest Blu just for the trailer.

THE RED HOUSE came from a company called HD CINEMA CLASSICS. Are they related to Film Chest/Detective?

Yep, one in the same. It was mentioned in the site reviews for each of the HD Cinema Classics films.

They are probably using a PD print for Dementia 13 as the original elements were so bad that one label had to stop production of it.
I have the Film Chest version and its DNR milky white awful. The Roan DVD is better even though it's an awful print.

I picked up KCC even though I had hear Criterion has it...but who knows if/when that will get released from them.

I think it was Beat the Devil that I saw in stores and the cover artwork was pixelated to hell.

What's up what that?

I've heard for years that Criterion wouldn't handle any more public domain titles after so many low end companies copied their definitive DVD transfer of CARNIVAL OF SOULS and sold it for pennies. So it's unlikely they would produce a Blu of KC CONFIDENTIAL, but who knows.

It would be licensed from MGM I would think..and some titles considered PD arent quite as cut and dry as they sound...

Ugh, you reminded me about Carnival of Souls, oh I wish Criterion would get around to that one.

You mean Criterion would use source materials supplied by MGM to differentiate from other releases or are you saying that Film Chest/Detective licensed the rights to KCC for their Blus? I find the latter hard to believe. In any case, I just can't see Criterion entering those muddy waters, but I'm definitely with you on wishing they would bring CARNIVAL OF SOULS to Blu. I'm surprised Arrow or MOC haven't tackled it.

Incidentally, is this new KCC burned or pressed? I missed that part.

MGM has a beautiful fine grain element taken from the original neg, but sadly have no rights to release it to home video. It ran several times in January on Comet TV and looked great.

Pure speculation, The Film Chest used a PD print, just like they did with the Bat. The Bat is with Disney. KCC is with MGM. I cant see a tiny studio like Film Chest or Film Detective making any deals with a big studio but PD prints are still out there.
KCC is a burned BDr in a case that looks like one from an Import company, like Arrow.

All I can say is, I know that there was a label who was going to release it but the elements were so poor that they didnt proceed with it. Some parts looked great, others looked terrible. I did get this from an insider who knows more about these things than I ever will. Whatever the issue is, only FD seems to be releasing it ,maybe from that fine grain element ? I know the Film Chest release stunk

this release looks quite decent to me, but it's definitely BD-R? That is, unfortunately, a deal breaker for me personally.

This is the backside of Beat the Devil. Definitely burned not pressed.

I took the picture at an angle so I wouldn't get my own reflection, so that's why it looks distorted. It is round and the hole is in the middle, but the disc is definitely BD-R.

Neither is a one-man operation, and they aren't the same:

Phil Hopkins, who owns Film Detective, used to be involved in Film Chest, but no more.

I had read they were the same company and largely one guy based on posts in the forums here, which means it had to be true. You know members here always know all the facts before they post, just as I did.
