In 1854, during the Crimean War, Britain declared war on Russia. With allies France and the Ottoman Empire, forces landed in the Crimea on September 14, 1854. On March 30, 1856 the Treaty of Paris was signed; in 1945 the last of the V-2 rockets to land in Britain fell on Orpington, Kent. Ivy Millichamp, aged 34, was the last of 67,100 civilian deaths in Britain during the Second World War; in 1973 Sacheen Littlefeather, a Native American activist, attended the 45th Academy Awards, where she declined the Best Actor Oscar (for The Godfather) on behalf of Marlon Brando; in 2020 prime minister Boris Johnson began a period of self-isolation at Downing Street after testing positive for Covid-19. On April 5 he was hospitalised and then moved into intensive care, then spent his recovery at Chequers. He returned to No 10 on April 26, 2020
Nature notes
In a tall street tree in central London a pair of crows were busy building a nest. Both the male and female flew in and out carrying sticks, a process that can take up to two weeks in a tricky location or in windy conditions. Finished nests are around 45cm wide, lined in the centre with moss, hair, grass or — especially in urban areas — bits of paper or other litter they’ve picked up. The female incubates the eggs for 20 days, the male bringing food; their chicks fledge a month after hatching. Crows construct a new nest each year, though they might reuse the same spot.
