Former child star Edward Furlong rose to fame playing John Connor in the legendary sequel Terminator 2: Judgment Day. He reprised the role in a controversial way for the 2019 movie Terminator: Dark Fate, and nearly five years later, Furlong reflected on how the return gave him mixed feelings during a new interview for Michael Rosenbaum's Inside of You podcast.

“I got called in to do some mo-cap work and kind of act the scene out. I got the call actually right when I got sober," Furlong explained, per Screen Rant. "They’re like, ‘They want to talk to you about the new Terminator,’ so I’m like, ‘Oh, it’s a sign. Thank you!’ And I get there and they’re like, yeah, we want you to play you at 14 and we’re just going to kill you. And I’m like, ‘Aw, sh-t.’"

Terminator 2 is often considered the perfect action movie, but 1984's The Terminator still feels like the most special Terminator movie in the series.

As Furlong noted, his return to the franchise consisted of using a stand-in and de-aging CGI, using the actor's likeness as seen in T2. In the beginning of Dark Fate, the recreated John Connor is killed by a Terminator. The scene was very controversial with fans, arguing that this undermined the importance of keeping John alive in the original films. Many fans were also hoping to see Furlong's return as John be more substantial, as the news of his casting ahead of the film's release had generated a lot of excitement with fans of Terminator 2.

Edward Furlong Didn't Understand Why T6 Would Kill John Connor

For Furlong's part, he admits that he didn't understand the creative reasoning for why the character would be killed off. Even so, he sees some good to have come out of the situation, feeling now that while he was sober, he still wasn't yet in the best position to be taking on such a project. Furlong was also happy to get the chance to reclaim the John Connor character, even if briefly, after a variety of actors had since taken over the role following his franchise exit.

Edward Furlong shares the "embarrassing" story of how he blew a major deal to return as John Connor in Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines.

"I didn’t understand, like, how the hell are they going to do that? I don’t know, it just felt a little bit like a What Ever Happened to Baby Jane situation," Furlong said. "So I went in there and did that, so I knew what was happening. It was a mixed feeling. It was understanding that I wasn’t in a place to shoot a movie right then anyway. I was kind of happy a little bit too… I was glad to just get the character back to myself, even if it was like for a day.
