television classic commercials + cigarette ads of the 1960s & 1950s
Have a Smoke and Be Somebody!
Talk about Government mandated health care, our nation's leaders decided almost forty years ago that Tobacco and TV don't mix. Before that, stars like John Wayne appeared on TV selling cigarettes, speaking highly of the product: "Mild and good tasting pack after pack. And I know, I've been smokin' em for twenty years." Coincidentally, some of the last commercials the Duke filmed were to ask people to stop smoking. Watch some of TV's wildest commercials like the dancing cigarette pack!

Fridays - Classic Friday night show - Fridays with Larry David Fridays
For a brief time in the early 1980s, as the Carter administration gave way to the Reagan era, Melanie Chartoff, Bruce Mahler, Larry David and Michael Richards were part of an industrious ensemble on Fridays, along with Darrow Igus, Mark Blankfield, his wife Brandis Kemp, John Roarke and Maryedith Burrell. Known primarily for two things - as a copy of Saturday Night Live and for a riotous appearance by Andy Kaufman - Fridays was so much more than that.

King's Island opened to the public on April 29, 1972 and, within 2 years, this Cincinnati, Ohio amusement park was visited by both the Partridge Family and the Brady Bunch. Scenes from those productions offer us a prime look at this quintessential midwestern theme park in its heyday.

The Gong Show!
1970s Phenomenon : The Gong Show
Chuck Barris was responsible for some of the most popular programs of the sixties, primetime and daytime hits like 'The Dating Game' and 'The Newlywed Game'. These pseudo-game shows fed off of an individual's willingness to do anything to be on television, 'The Gong Show' would take that premise a step further. ABC bought the show for nighttime syndication, to debut in the fall of 1976.

Plunk your magic clanger Froggy! "Plunk Your Magic Twanger, Froggy!"
"I am looking for a newspaper editorial - it could've also been in a magazine - written about the kid's TV show 'Andy's Gang' in which the writer blames Froggy for causing the protest movement of the 60s. He said Froggy's disrespectful behavior towards adults, which he demonstrated every show, influenced the kids who were watching him and those kids grew up to become the protesting college students of the sixties who likewise showed disrespect towards their elders."

TV's Bozo / Interview with Boston's Franl Avruch
A Talk With a TV Legend!
During the 1960s, the Bozo the Clown show was a mainstay of children’s programming. While there were several different men playing Bozo in various TV markets across the United States, only one actor was the national face of the whacky but good-natured clown. He was radio and TV announcer actor Frank Avruch.

TV Blog / Classic TV show Car 54 Where Are you starring star Joe E. RossBizarre Life & Death of Joe E. Ross
Car 54 was dropped after two terms and a few years later Joe E. Ross landed the show I first saw him on, It's About Time, which I loved as a 9 year old. The kooky combo of Joe E. Ross and Imogene Coca was hard to resist. Again his co-workers complained about his loutish behavior and that one season wonder was the comedian's last primetime series.

Jack Sheldon!
Jack Sheldon - you may not recognize the name but you'll recognize his voice from those wonderful Schoolhouse Rock segments from Saturday mornings. My favorite of his was 'Conjunction Junction' but there were others - like perhaps the most well-known of the bunch, 'How a Bill Becomes a Law.'

Classic TV Show Sanford Arms based on Sanford & Son The Ironic Death of Redd Foxx!
For whatever reason (and the actor's drug and alcohol consumption was surely a factor), the network that capitulated to everyone from Bob Hope to Johnny Carson over the years refused to (or could not) make Redd Foxx happy.

Soupy Sales / Classic TV Star Soupy! The Tonight Show starring Soupy Sales?
When Jack Paar decided to leave The Tonight Show in March of 1962, he scheduled Sales as his final guest. In a 1962 Detroit News interview Sales stated, "Jack Paar called me and said, 'They're going to expect me to cry on that final night. You come and hit me with a pie instead.' I was delighted. What a break! I worked hard doing my Los Angeles daytime show ahead on tape so I could go to New York. Then Paar decided it wouldn't be dignified or something and I was cancelled. Was I burned. He called me; I didn’t call him. I spent a lot of time getting ready."

Darby Crash record1980's PUNK ROCK
In the early-eighties, young people in Los Angeles were flocking to makeshift clubs in droves to see new, up and coming bands. Live new music, not DJs, was what they craved. These writings provide a sketchy look at the underground club scene in Los Angeles during the time that groups like X, Missing Persons, The Go-Go's, The Minutemen and Wall of Voodoo entered the public consciousness.
