RICHARD FORD OBITUARY

Richard Charles Ford
Feb. 13, 1951 - July 9, 2022
Richard Charles Ford unexpectedly passed away Saturday, July 9, 2022, at the age of 71.
Rich was born Feb. 13, 1951, and raised in Wilmette, Ill. His formative summers were spent on family vacations to Hayward, Wis., always angling for the mighty muskellunge. He graduated from New Trier East High School ('69), and University of Denver ('73). After living in Spokane, he moved to Portland in 1981 where he began his career in commercial real estate, eventually starting RC Ford and Company. He initiated and partnered in numerous projects and developments that transformed the Pearl District into a popular and vigorous commercial/residential district of Portland. He settled on Sauvie Island with his bride Kristin in 1991 where they built their lives around their beloved children and the island's offerings: bicycling, duck hunting and salmon fishing on the rivers.
Rich was a loving husband, devoted father, and loyal friend to many from all walks of his life. He was a gifted athlete and loved golf, swimming, tennis, skiing, and most of all, fishing. He chased muskies in Northern Wisconsin and salmon on the Oregon Coast. With great enthusiasm and generosity, he shared these passions, as well as his many ongoing projects, with anyone and everyone he encountered. An entrepreneur at heart, Rich started an Italian sandwich cafe, produced hard cider from the apples he and his wife grew, and ranched a herd of Scottish Highland Beef cattle for Portland-area restaurants and organic beef devotees, an enterprise that continues today. Rich and Kristin hosted countless celebrations at their Sauvie Island home, from cider harvests to his justly famous Christmas party. Rich deeply loved his family and friends that hailed from all parts of his life: Sauvie Island, Scappoose, Spider Lake, real estate development, golf, duck hunting, fishing, and more. Rich was a kind, friendly, and funny person with a distinctively colorful personal style. Rich was a generous mentor and benefactor to many. Rich would have eagerly told you that just a week before he passed that he caught the largest musky of his life. (And then lost an even larger one!)
Rich was preceded in death by his parents, Donald A. Ford (1968), Lois Kunzelman Ford Rhyne (2012); stepfather, Arthur Rhyne; brother, Don Ford; and in-laws, Jake and Nancy Jacobsen. He is survived by his wife, Kristin Jacobsen Ford; daughter, Anna; and son, Jake; and his sons, Tucker and Cody from a previous marriage; as well as siblings, Steve Ford, Mary Pulsifer (Jim), and stepbrother, Trent Rhyne. Additional family members mourning Rich's loss include Kit and Jim Rasmussen, Amy and Drew Johnston (Tooter and Henry), Laura and Marcial Cordova-Sanchez, Rob Jacobsen and Jim Tinkle, Katie and Sadie Ford, Donald and James Ford, the Javier Alvarez family, the Nania families, and dozens of best friends.
The family is planning a commemorative celebration on a date to be announced, and is grateful for the incredible outpouring of support from friends and the community in the wake of this shocking and sudden loss. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Rich's name to the Sauvie Island Fire Dept. (18342 Sauvie Island Road, Portland, OR 97231) or to the "Rich Ford Musky Fund" through FIELD Edventures, Inc., to help restore the habitat of the muskies (Field Edventures, Inc. c/o Victoria Rydberg-Nania, W11360 State Road 127, Portage, WI 53901).

Rich was a wonderful part of our community and especially supportive and welcoming to me personally in the commercial real estate arena.
I remember wearing a leather jacket to a work function and he liked it so much he´s asked if he could copy it for his wife and make one out of their Highland hides. I think I handed him my jacket that night so he could make a pattern. My heart is broken to hear this news. Rich will be missed. My condolences to his family and friends.

Our sincere condolences to the entire Ford family on the loss of Rich Ford.

It was our pleasure to talk and walk or just hang out on the porch with Rich talking about fishing, mushrooms, dogs, or wine...the list goes on. Rich knew how to keep a topic going and keep it interesting.

We will miss our conversations Rich. You were an interesting, inspiring, and exceptional person. Hayward will never be the same without you, our friend.

Rich and Christmas Eve at my brother´s house on SI have gone hand in hand for years. I´m so sad for the Ford family and the multitude of friends and acquaintances he left behind. The world is less bright for his passing from it. All my love to Kristin, Jake and Anna. My heart hurts for you.

I had the privilege to know Rich in the last year. He was passionate about everything he did, whether it be his family, friends, real estate career, gentlemen rancher/farmer, golfing and fishing. This spring I asked Rich to join me along with my son in law Chris Hatfield and another friend for a round of golf where I introduced him to my birdie bottle. He said to me, "Hey, I have one of those in my bag and it´s full of Brandy". That sums it up, Rich was a class act. Rest In Peace Rich and may the lord bless your soul. Our thoughts and prayers are with Kristin and the family.

I met Rich Ford about nine years ago. He and Kristin picked me up at the airport and took me to their home on Sauvie Island. Rich was driving and by some miracle we did make it to Sauvie Island.
Rich is the only person I know who could hold a conversation while turning his head to the back seat and drive at the same time. Great memories of the time I got to spend with Rich and Kristin at their house.
My condolences to Kristin, Anna and Jake, and family and friends.

I knew Rich having met his brother, Steve, in high school.

Our paths crossed sporadically through the years, but I always loved the way he could subtlety light up a room and make others seem special.

Rich....you made the world better.

My heart goes out to all that knew him.

Rich Ford. One of the best men I have ever encountered in the business. Rich's generosity was boundless always sending an invitation to join in the fun and energy of whatever he was doing whether it was always being sure I knew my kids could come pick a pumpkin or catch a fish or egging me on to get to the next cider or Christmas party. He is the best of men and built a legacy of kindness that will live on for me and I am sure all those who know him. And to his family, I am beyond sorry for this tremendous loss and know that there is a lot of love out here for all of you.
