Course Overview
This online short course is aimed at those looking for guidance on auditioning for Drama School Courses.
This five-session course aims to demystify the process of auditioning for drama schools. It includes two sessions on classical monologues,
two sessions on contemporary monologues and one session on the nuts and bolts of auditioning,
including screen-work to help with self-taping and auditioning via zoom.
What does this course offer you?
Whilst no course can ever guarantee you a place at drama school, the sessions include a chance to:
- Explore techniques to deepen your approach to classical and contemporary speeches
- Develop tools to free up your vocal and emotional expression
- Work on techniques to help with screen-work, self-taping and auditioning via zoom.
Who is this Short Acting course for?
- Those thinking of applying for Professional actor training
- Those who do not have any prior experience
- Those wishing to hone particular skills
The tutors are all experienced senior acting tutors who teach at The Oxford School of Drama and have sat on audition panels at various drama schools. Tutors include Edward Hicks the Principal, John Ward the Head of Acting and Paloma Oakenfold, Head of Foundation Course and Outreach. Each of the five sessions is 2 hours and will take place online 6-8pm during the week of the 9th Jan and 16th Jan.

- The course is open to anyone age 16+ and limited to 12 participants, so early application is advised.

Each course looks at a specific challenge that actors face with the aim of helping the actor find ease, connection and better understanding of the actor’s craft within that particular discipline. Drawing on the skills and techniques taught on our core courses at the Oxford School of Drama these short courses will give students clear techniques and tools to take forward with a growing confidence as actors.

Shakespeare

Course Overview
This is an Intensive short course aimed at actors looking to find more joy and confidence in performing verse and poetic text. Designed to liberate your capacity to understand, play with and revel in the challenges of Shakespeares’ texts.
What will the course cover?
We will explore approaches by world-leading practitioners whose work demystifies verse speaking by focusing on the physical, visceral, sensory and ensemble aspects of the work. You will leave this fun, interactive and expressive experience with an arsenal of skills and approaches that will enable you to:
- Embrace and play with poetic verse (both soliloquy and duologue)
- Analyse text, through doing!
- Feel empowered to commit to language; finding the size of the text in your body and voice
- Find character through argument, punctuation, rhythm and language
- Write your own Iambic verse poems!
Course Tutor
This is a four day, intensive course. Alongside exploring approaches to many famous speeches and characters you will work on a specific piece of text and character throughout the week and participate in a sharing/performance at the end of the week.

Screen Acting

Course Overview
This popular intensive 4 day screen acting course introduces students to the challenges an actor working in film and television (both established and novice) faces. The screen acting course aims to demystify the filming process, enabling actors to feel more confident and relaxed on camera and will include a professional camera person in addition to an experienced director/tutor.
What will the course cover?
The Screen acting course will look at acting in film and television and include casting for screen, Self-tape, finding work, how to approach a script, shooting short scenes, developing new acting techniques, adapting existing skills, dealing with technical pressures, set dynamics and identifying ‘bad habits’.
Course Tutor
This intensive film and television acting course will feature professional equipment and playback facilities. This will enable students to analyse their progression throughout and experience the shooting environment.
DEVISING AND CREATING:
Audio Fiction Podcasts
15th – 18th August

Course Overview
This 4-day course will provide students with the skills and knowledge they need to write for audio fiction and podcasts. By the end of the course students will have completed a script for a 10-minute piece of audio fiction. Through a combination of talks, workshops, and practical exercises, students will learn how to:
- Develop strong characters and plots
- Create vivid and engaging soundscapes
- Use dialogue to drive the action and reveal character
- Structure a story for audio
- Work with actors and sound designers

The course will cover the following topics:
- The history of audio fiction and podcasts

Course Tutor
Jeremy Mortimer is a freelance director and producer. He has produced and directed over 150 radio plays and features for BBC Radio and has worked with many leading writers including John Arden, David Rudkin, Winsome Pinnock, Mark Ravenhill, Sue Townsend and Benjamin Zephaniah. He teaches writing for audio at the National Film and Television School and has run writing courses across the UK.
DEVISING AND CREATING:
Short Films

Course Overview
This 10 day course will provide students with a better understanding and knowledge of the filmmaking and script-writing skills they need to create short films. Through a combination of talks, practical workshops, and hands on experience of shooting, students will follow the production process from script-to-screen and create a short piece of shot content. That will be screened to students on the last day.
What will the course cover?
The course will cover the following topics:
- Writing for screen
- Visual storytelling
- Producing short films
- Pre-production including casting
- Planning and scheduling
- Working with actors and crew
- Post-production including editing
- On completion of the course students will be given a copy of the finished edited work.
