Lou Christie doit sans doute son succès autant à sa jolie petite gueule qu'au falsetto un peu ridicule dont ses producteurs le sommaient d'abuser et qui fut sa marque de fabrique. On est en 1965-1966, et le Brill Building se met en quatre pour concocter au jeune homme (qui fait aussi l'acteur parfois) une ribambelle de sucreries soutenues par un trio de choristes choucroutées excellant dans les doo-wap-woop-doo-wap et autres chap-ouh-ah-oh-du-ronda. L'objectif est clairement la lycéenne américaine moyenne frissonnant à l'écoute des paroles tout de même osées (pour l'époque!) de par exemple "Lightin' Strikes" où le petit Lou demande à sa régulière de patienter jusqu'à ce qu'il ait fini de se taper tout ce qui bouge, ou de "Rhapsody in the Rain", version finalement censurée, où il est question, j'hésite à le dire, de coït.
Il y a dans cette compilation de quoi satisfaire l'amateur de sons spectoriens (glockenspiels, basse six-cordes,...). Il y a aussi quelques merdes redoutables, notamment ce "Lita" (décliné ici en trois versions!) que Rika Zaraï n'aurait pas désavoué.
La carrière de Lou Christie s'est un peu arrêtée quand il a pris de la bedaine. Aujourd'hui, il doit en être aux animations de Thanksgiving chez Wal-Mart, déguisé en dinde. Mais il a eu sa petite heure de gloire.
Sympa.

There is little doubt that some of Lou Christie's very best output dates from his MGM period, which only lasted some ten months in terms of dates of recordings. Being already familiar with the main highlights of this era ("Lightnin' Strikes", "Rhapsody In The Rain", "Trapeze" and so on) I was keen to discover some of the lesser known material. Sadly, it proved to be a disappointing exercise.
Whilst the hits and better B-sides still sound superb, many of the other album and single tracks fail to get out of the starting blocks. The slower ballads sound pretty ordinary and there is a stream of up-tempo numbers that are OK but far from inspiring. Three versions of "Lita"/"Song of Lita" are included. One would have been enough for me.
If you've never heard Lou Christie before then this compilation will still be of interest but I guess it's mainly for the committed fans and completists.
