I WISH KC3 would change the order so that the #PrincessOfWales outranks everyone but the Queen.C, even when she’s not with Wm. Why should the future Queen rank behind the Yorks?

Historically, the woman holding the title of Pss of Wales ranked after the Queen Consort and any Queens Dowager and before a Princess Royal (unless that Princess was an Empress like Vicky in her later years).

That’s what I thought too but Debrett’s has the #PrincessOfWales (when unaccompanied by the Prince of Wales) BEHIND Princess Anne, Princess Charlotte, Princess Lilibet, Princesses Beatrice & Eugenie, & Princess Alexandra. I just can’t fathom Catherine behind Lili in rank.

I’m discussing historical tables of precedence, not the recent changes QEII ushered in during the latter part of her reign. If you read a Victorian or Edwardian edition of Debrett’s you can see the difference.

In the 1921 edition, the Princess Royal was Louise, Duchess of Fife (daughter of the late Edward VII). She had two daughters: Pss Alexandra (2nd Duchess of Fife) and Pss Maud (later Countess of Southesk). Alexandra and Maud were created HH Princess by their grandfather.

And to further confuse matters, Alexandra (Louise’s daughter) married her cousin HRH Prince Arthur of Connaught, Queen Victoria’s grandson. So Alexandra became HRH after marriage. She also inherited the Fife ducal title by special remainder.
