Ate in Chez Mal Brasserie last night and honestly sad that it wasn’t better... the service was SO slow. The service not the kitchen. We were both keeping an eye out trying to get eye contact with staff but they were oblivious (it didn’t help...that the lighting was low, but still 🙄). It’s a balance right... don’t rush people and make them feel like you want the table, with being realistic about timings and indeed attentive. Our table was at 8pm. Firstly we had to get the lady’s attention to ask for a menu even, and subsequently get her attention again to order a drink and bread. It took about 40 mins for our main food order to be taken, thus didn’t get mains til 9.15pm. Then they had the audacity to hurry us along ordering dessert at 9.35pm because the kitchen was closing at 10pm! They were friendly enough but just not slick, not as good as it has been or should be. The food was fine - yummy calamari although honestly the steak frites wasn’t pink (I was super hungry by that point!). Being in the centre of Reading you have so many other options... I’d seek them out ratherMore

My partner and I recently had a night at this hotel over the bank holiday hope to have a relaxing night away from the stress and strains of everyday life . It turned out to be the worse night in a hotel I have ever...had . We booked an executive room with dinner and breakfast as a deal . To be honest when we first got in the room it was ok so we unpacked and went exploring. We came back for the dinner in Chez Mal and to be honest it was terrible. My partner ordered the calamari and it came up like a pile of batter with little or no fish in it so it was sent back. The next course was a prawn curry and a chicken dish ,the curry prawns were so hard that was sent back with the waiter asking can I get you anything else . The chicken was like it was under the hot plate for two days it was so dry and then finally we wanted to order a crem brûlée’s they was sold out . The waiter than gave us a bottle of proccecco as a sorry but by then it was too late the meal was spoilt so we went to bed. During the night the sash windows was banging all night and it was so bad we couldn’t sleep . I told reception in the morning about this and he insulted my intelligence but saying it’s the first he heard of it even though previous guest had put cardboard in the gapes to stop the noise I have been to malmaisons before and had a great experience but this beyond bad will never use them againMore

The food here is very good quality and well presented. The only thing that loses a star in the rating is the price.

Stayed on 13th March Friday night deal, the evening meal and breakfast were great along with customer service. It was one of our friends special big birthday, I mentioned this when we arrived at reception only to find later that evening the hotel put a...little something in the room for her and a happy birthday plate at the end of our evening meal lovely touches and thoughtful. Enjoyed the cocktails in the bar. The location is amazing just across the road from the station and 2 minutes walk to the shops. Would definitely go back and stay .More

I stayed at the Malmaison in Reading for work and arrived in the evening and had lots of printing and other difficult requests. Despite it being late Ioanna and her colleague Akrem worked hard to solve our issues and managed to get everything we needed...printed for me before our early start the next day. Ioanna was incredibly kind and understanding. Thank you!!!More

First night late arrival was the reason to seek a quick hamburger to fill my belly. I had a decent one in hotel's restaurant with mcDonald's style thin french fries.
