This medal depicting Ludovico III Gonzaga, the Marquis of Mantua, was made by Bartolomeo Melioli, dated 1475.
On this medal appear two late portraits of Ludovico. In both he is wearing armour, although his fighting days were long over.
The inscription on the obverse refers to the famous relic of the Precious Blood in Sant' Andrea. On the reverse he is seated and confronted by Faith and Learning (Pallas Athene).
Bartolomeo Melioli, a Mantuan goldsmith and coin-engraver, made five other Gonzaga medals.
