She was born in the year 1949 on 26th of May. She was born in a place called Winston-Salem, which lies in North Carolina of United States of America. Her parents are Clarence Grier and Gwendolyn Grier and she has two siblings; Gina Grier-Townsie and Rodney Grier. She quotes,” But I’m a mix of several races: Hispanic, Chinese, and Filipino. My dad was black, and my mom was Cheyenne Indian”. She was raised as a Catholic and baptized a Methodist.

She grew up in Colorado and continued to live there even when she stopped making movies. The daughter of an Air Force mechanic and a nurse, her rural upbringing played a large role in who she grew up to be and her personality. Her grandfather was the first feminist and he taught her to fish and inspired her to get educated. However there is a darker side to her story. At age 6, Grier was raped by two boys when she was left unattended at her aunt’s house. At 19, Grier dropped out of Metropolitan State College of Denver as she began to be cast in several movies. But she made sure never forgot her feminist upbringing.She made her stand as a strong independent woman amidst a series of tough guys and white supremacists.

She gained her stardom with “Foxy Brown” but controversy never left her. She became a symbol of black women empowerment and hence attracted a lot of unwanted attention. She was spotted by agent Dave Baumgarten at another beauty pageant who invited her to move to Hollywood to participate in acting in the movies. She quickly established a career in “blaxploitation” films of the 1970s. Her films have often been criticized for portraying black characters negatively but she maintains her stand by saying they only exposed the ugly side of such communities.
