Bristol Grammar School’s IB diploma students are celebrating after once again achieving outstanding results.
One student secured a perfect 45 out of 45 – a phenomenal score attained by under 1% of those who take the qualification worldwide. Two further pupils scored 44 points each, and five pupils in total scored 41 points or more, an outstanding feat. In fact, grades were phenomenal across the board with an average score of 37.7 (considered, by Manchester University for example as equivalent to higher than A*AA at A level). This average score is the highest of all of our IB cohorts so far, with the exception of the COVID year of 2021. The global average for the IB this year was 30.2 points.
Summing up the group’s achievement, IB Coordinator Andy Jarvis said: “The IB diploma is a rigorous and challenging qualification, but one which is also immensely rewarding. We have a set of results to be tremendously proud of and a set of young people of whom we are equally proud. The undoubted highlight was a pupil who achieved the maximum 45 points, something which only about 200 students worldwide achieve each year.
As a cohort they have come so far and made such amazing progress across the board. All pupils deserve immense praise for outstanding point scores and their endeavour to achieve their personal best. Well done to them all.”
The range of courses and destinations for this IB cohort is varied and exciting with pupils leaving BGS for Oxford, Queen’s, Belfast and Manchester universities among others. The courses they plan to study include Italian and German, Medicine, and Law and Politics.
IB student Edwin is planning to study Earth Sciences at University College, London, and on receiving his results said: “I just can’t believe it! I’ve really enjoyed my time at BGS, and the friends I’ve made since Year 7; I’ve loved the whole experience.”
Head of Sixth Form, Justin Harford said, “The IB Diploma qualification allows students to study a wide range of subjects concurrently, demonstrating both a depth and breadth of knowledge. It’s just fantastic to see the wide range of courses and destinations that our pupils are moving onto – one of our pupils is considering a university education in France – which is a real testament to the variety that the IB offers. We’re incredibly proud of the results of our 2024 IB cohort, and I’d especially like to thank our teaching staff for their passion and dedication to their IB subjects. We wish our IB pupils every success as they begin their university education.”
