German Nobility. Born the elder of the two daughters of Sigismund I and his first wife Barbara Zápolya. In 1535 she married Elector Joachim II in Kraków. Although Joachim II converted to protestantism in 1439, she was promised that she would always be free in the exercise her religion. In 1549 she had an accident where she hurt her pelvis and broke her leg. As a result she remained crippled and had to use a crutch for the rest of her life. Their marriage grew cold and Joachim replaced her with Anna Dieterich. Hedwig survived her husband by two years.
