As a writer, I’m always most interested in the Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay race.

For me that’s where the BEST PICTURES ARE!  I know that over all the best picture is the entire package, acting, directing, producing, cinematography.  The BEST PICTURE is one that takes all the arts and produces the best over all product. (according to the Academy. It’s all subjective anyway.)

But, to me, in reality, the best picture of the year is the one of the ones that gets the screenwriting award.  Because, it’s all right there on paper.  The promise of a Best Picture.  It’s there on the page, and whether it’s translation to the screen wasn’t perfect enough, or not.  To me the race ends at the Best Original and Adapted Screenplay Oscars.  That’s where the BEST PICTURE IS FOUND.

so here’s a list of the best original screenplay and adapted screenplays of the 00’s.

and whether they went on to win best picture or not:

Original: Almost Famous

Adapted:  Traffic

Best Picture: Gladiator. (I think Almost Famous and Traffic, make a case for a best picture win over Gladiator)

Original: Gosford Park

Adapted:  A Beautiful Mind.

Best Picture: A Beautiful Mind. (I love the screenplay, it’s like reading a novel, but it was not my favorite movie.  hmm? my theory has HOLES.)

Original: Talk to Her

Adapted: The Pianist

Best Picture: Chicago  (hmm, Chicago left me cold, so did The Pianist.  But Talk to Her was one of my favorite pictures that year. Okay. Back on track!)

Original: Lost in Translation

Adapted: Lord of the Rings – The Return of the King.

Best Picture: Lord of the Rings – The Return of the King. (a massive achievement!  Still one of my favorite movies of all time.  Yup. I’m that geek!)

Original: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Adapted:  Sideways

Best Picture: Million Dollar Baby (No comment.)

Original: Crash

Adapted: Brokeback Mountain

Best Picture: Crash (oh, this one always starts a fight.  And for some reason, I still think Good Night and Good Luck was the better picture of that year. )

Original: Little Miss Sunshine

Adapted: The Departed

Best Picture: The Departed (I loved this movie.  so I didn’t mind AT ALL)

Original: Juno

Adapted: No Country for Old Men

Best Picture: No Country for Old Men.

Original: Milk

Adapted: Slumdog Millionaire

Best Picture: Slumdog Millionaire (I make an argument for MILK.  What a great film!)

Original:  The Hurt Locker

Adapted: Precious

Best Picture:  The Hurt Locker. (Totally okay with this.  It’s an amazing film.)

The Nominees:

Original:  Another Year, The Fighter, Inception, The Kids are Alright, The King’s Speech.

Adapted:  127 Hours, The Social Network, Toy Story 3, True Grit, Winter’s Bone.

NOTE: the only Best Picture Nominee not to get a screenplay nomination is Black Swan.

to me the race is between – The Social Network and The King’s Speech.   And these will win the screenplay awards.  But, if they don’t, it will be interesting to see how that will reflect on the Best Picture winner.
