I don’t understand Tony Soprano and his thing with the Russian girl.

I’m doing yet another rewatch of the Sopranos and I’m on season 4. He beats the Assemblyman who is having a relationship with the Russian girl…only to have the Russian girl blow his shite up a few episodes later and cause him and Carmela to break up.

The Russian girl had moved on and he has access to any piece of arse he wants at the Bing.

I don’t understand this self sabotage.

I think that was exactly the point they were trying to get across

Yeah, but it’s frustrating to watch. Like in season 2 he sent Silvio over to tell the Russian to never contact Tony again. It just doesn’t make sense.

He's not thinking rationally. Also he struggles when other people are happy. Remember thanksgiving dinner with Janice and Bobby. She's finally found a happy place and Tony can't stand it, so he tears her down and she loses it. IMO it's his darkest moment of the series.

It’s almost as if Tony is his own worst enemy and by the end of the show is left with nothing besides a hollow victory over Phil

Not only that but that move put the Esplanade deal in jeopardy, which would have exposed him to threats from other mob guys. As noted, I think he can't be happy or see other people happy. Also, he probably feels like no-one else should have her even if he doesn't. Terrible move.

ETA: in real life, this Zellman probably starts cooperating with the FBI after that beating from a boss of a family, or even a glorified crew.

It's to emphasize what happens to men when the one-eyed little head does all the thinking......

I just assumed “Oh Girl” was a really special song for Tony.

Who hasn’t beat the crap out of a lackey right in front of a former sidepiece upon hearing their favorite Mo Town tune?

It was to show that just like Livia Tony could not stand to see other people happy or successful. There was a parallel there which Dr Melfi touched on and it made Tony leave her office enraged.

I felt it was just Tony’s latest ego-bruised toxic fixation. IIRC earlier, Tony had ended it so there was no rational reason for him to get pissed that she had moved on with the councilman guy, but he sure did.

Been awhile since I’ve watched but didn’t the councilman start seeing her without telling Tony? Maybe it was a respect thing.

It’s a classic case of, I don’t want her but no one else can have her either…. We all know someone like that.

No he told Tony he was seeing her after a meeting about their HUD scam and asked Tony if he minded. Tony told him she was a great girl and pretended he was happy for them. One thing about what a poster said regarding endangering the esplanade deal was that Tony might’ve had that in mind because Johnny and Carmine started using the Esplanade to tax Tony in other ways. Tony might’ve wanted to threaten the deal or at least push back at New York for intruding on his turf and using Zellman to do it. Not saying that was the sole reason but there were multiple factors that led to beating Zellman. Like always with Tony little things pile up then they blow.

Tony always saw her as his girl no matter what.

Exactly, he asked Tony if he minded after he had already been dicking her. He should have asked Tony before ever pursuing her.

A respect thing.

re: I don’t understand Tony Soprano and his thing with the Russian girl.
But that’s not why he beat him it was just an excuse to do it. Johnny Sack and Carmine started dipping into Tony’s side hustles that had nothing to do with the esplanade claiming because “we share Zellman” so anything he used Zellman for they were entitled to. Tony says it at one point “somebody’s talking” and Zellman could be that somebody so when he finds out he’s dating Irina then hears the song it sets him off. New York and Zellman could be in it together, they’re both infringing on his territory.
