O.P.

Network: NBC

Timeless centers on Alexandra King who, time traveling between earth’s future and present day, finds herself caught between two men she desperately loves, the worlds they each inhabit and the secrets that could destroy them all. “Timeless is… about provoking thought and asking the proverbial question, ‘What if?’ which is a feat and I believe that we did that incredibly well on Quantum Leap,” writer and exec producer Deborah Pratt said. “The availability of visual effects and great human story telling happening in TV opens the medium to a whole new set of dimensions.”.

If you can pull off another Quantum Leap then I'm all for it.

What happened to the good old days of time paradox stories, like changing the course of history, you know saving the Dinosaurs, restoring the Roman Empire, stuff like that.

Tried that with Terra Nova.... that too eventually became more about love. Anyone would think Hollywood is being run by teenaged girls lately.

Then that would be science fiction – which has no place in movies or TV anymore.

Are there ANY TV shows that don't deteriorate into a Days Of Our Lives love drama?

Every show I've ever enjoyed has been a season or two of quality content, and then a slow decline into nothing but awkward love triangles and main plot lines focusing on who the lead character is more romantically interested in this week.

You had me at timetravel and lost me at 'caught between two men', twilight with time travel just comes to mind. And whilst I guess its not fair to judge a show without seeing it, I think comparing this to quantum leap is pretty fn lofty.

British Television, like Misfits.

Seriously, how much better would television be if the Hollywood executives would flap right off, it seems that the directors/creators of shows generally have really good ideas but then someone comes along and "YOU AREN'T FOLLOWING THE FORMULA, FOLLOW THE FORMULA!!!".

Walking Dead, Heroes, most "sci fi" shows, there are very few shows that seem to get away from simply being a generic teen romance/drama tv show overlaid by a genre of some type for more than a season or two, and plenty of them last only an episode or two before they slip into being formulaic shit.

Not quite sure I see the point in sending a black guy back in time if they are going to constantly point out the racism. Lets hope they don't do it every episode, although since next episode is going to be based around Lincoln it will probably be unavoidable.

And (sometimes) Suits.

On the fence on this one. Intrigued about the back story with the diary(?) and the motivation for he baddie (the dad from Extant). Also about how they will fix the timeline (bring back the sister but mum will still be sick?).

But it was a bit dumb and they already massively changed things and don't seem to be taking much care not to.

How does the time machine move location? Move in time I can follow but that doesn't change its location. How do they know they won't end up embedded in a wall or a tree or something?

It's interesting.. the time machine works by manipulation of gravity, so you can argue that you can use gravity to move it in space.

Much more interesting is the fact that earth is constantly moving, so if you go do a different month the earth will be in a different part of the orbit around the sun... and the sun is moving around the Milky Way, which in turn is moving around the centre of the universe. So to hit the earth at all, you must displace in space. Edit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JWVshkVF0SY

Alternatively, consider it a plot device :)

Hah, this has always bugged me about time travel stuff as well. Especially when they start talking science-y stuff about calculating when. Trying to calculate the relative position in space ... lol ... especially accounting for expansion. FYI "centre of the universe" is possibly meaningless in any terms we can use.

As to the show, I found it "watchable", nothing more. What I found more intriguing is that they are looking to include very serious time-travel consequences as part of the plot. Just hoping it doesn't get too convoluted, or be too simplistic in "your address, job, car, phone #, keys etc are all the same ... except for the extreme changes to your family circumstances"

Good time travel stories are very hard to write/produce. It has to be entertaining enough that the audience doesn't ponder the details too much.

This is off to a pretty terrible start with some very dumb sciencey fiction.
I'll give it a few more episodes but they need to do a lot better if they want to keep me for the long haul.

I hate the old "you can't go back to a time when you already exist" trope in time travel fiction – there's nothing in known physics (which does allow for closed timelike curves) that says anything of the sort, so why make it up for the show apart from to save lazy writers from having to come up with a better reason for them not being able to go back and fix things after screwing up.

Why didn't they just throw the Hindenburg bomb out of a window?

What is the impact on the timeline of the Hindenburg disaster being caused by terrorists, instead of a basic flaw in Zeppelin design?
Wouldn't there be a similar response to the terrorism that came after 911, involving a major ramping up of security laws and enforcement departments?

Why is it "fate" for some people (e.g. Prettysoldierboy's wife) to die, but it's ok for others to be saved (e.g. the passengers on the Hindenburg)?

Who cares who whatshernames father really is?

Why do they insist on sending poor Lem from Better Off Ted back to times when he'll be treated like dirt? if they need him to drive the timeship, why not just leave him on the timeship?

If the bad guy really wanted to alter time he would go back to a significant date and change something that was not the most obvious thing in the world on that day.

Or better yet just go back on a completely random day and do something that no one would be able to figure out.

How do people get the funding for this trash?

Won't be for awhile yet.

We are working on our overall plan for Season 2 right now and we’ll pitch it to NBC in April, so I’m reluctant to get too much into it because we’ll want to take a deep breath and evaluate the whole season before we commit to what we want to do in Season 2. What I can say is the current plan involves our heroes traveling to the past to stop history from being perverted and changed too much.

The shorter episode run probably helped, as they could just get to the through lines of the plot without having to add too many filler eps like we see in some shows.

I blame NBC for airing it a 10pm on a Sunday night it needs to be on around 7pm so the whole family can sit around and watch. Looking forward to next week.

Anyway, this episode was good. I like the idea of sleeper agents being used in different time periods.

Decided to look up Rittenhouse on Wikipedia just to see what it brings up:

I have actually quite enjoyed this, perhaps surprisingly so.
The storylines are quite entertaining.

Two aspects though that I really quite dislike.
Firstly, since the intent was always to have them join forces with Flynn, they should have made him less of a murdering sociopath.
Secondly the current Rittenhaus incarnation makes no sense.
It doesn't take much imagination to conceive of the idea of altering history with a time machine. However taking the time to write a detailed manifesto, based on the premise, 100 years ago, tends to indicate a significant psychiatric problem. Yet they went back in time to rescue the lunatic as though he is some kind of Messiah. Not to mention the rather enormous paradox inherent in trying to alter history on such a scale.

Not too angry though as this was obvious from a mile away and they did tie up quite a few elements in the process so not a complete waste of time

Who knows, maybe it will return just like this season was a ‘bonus’

Yeah don't you hate it when a show doesn't align with your politics. I too only watch shows which confirm my bias. I don't have to have my opinions challenged so much then.

I did my part by watching it on Hulu where the stats kind of count :) . It's very much on the bubble, but it couldn't be worse than last year when they cancelled it and then uncancelled it days later. But I think they did a good job of kind of wrapping things up in case it is the last episode.

I feel they overdid the whole Rittenhaus thing.
it was there to provide a trigger for the stories. "Baddies want to change history, so we have to go back and stop them". Not the greatest or most flawless of pretexts, but workable. However they transformed it into taking over the whole story.

Never understood the point of such movies. They're expensive to make, never so much "provide closure" as much as "kill everyone off in 90 minutes." They fail as movies, go straight to whatever replaced Video/DVD/Blu-ray, and are only ever watched by a handful of fans.

Just what the article says. It says two parts not two hours so I took it to mean they may air it over two separate nights rather than a two hour block. Maybe it is just that article, USA Today https://www.usatoday.com/story/life/tv/2018/07/31/timeless-nbc-fans-earn-another-reprieve-finale-movie/869533002/ makes it sound like it will be a two hour block movie which would be the best option IMO. Although it will be more like 90 minutes with 30 minutes of ads lol. They have a lot to wrap up in that time. The good news is we won’t have to wait long. The USA Today article says “The plan is to start filming the finale in mid-October in Los Angeles. It is scheduled to air sometime around Christmas”

Not everything is directly about making money. This is obviously an indirect approach. Network loyalty/reputation. NBC is showing that they care about their viewers. Even if they only just come out even without making much then it is probably worth it. Obviously they have decided it is as they are making it.

Or is it just going to be episode after episode of the three main characters chasing the bad guy through time with no real resolution?

You really need to be able to enjoy it for what it is. Each episode is an interesting look at an historical event. The premise of getting them there, and/or why the guy apparently trying to destroy history, needs to accepted as is for this to work.

Season 2 indeed mixes it u, but gets very wrapped up in the whole universal conspiracy arc, so its debatable whether its an improvement at all.

I gave it another couple of episodes but I think I'm done. While I am interested in the historical aspect, I just feel like most of the events I've seen in it so far have been done already by other shows, and done better. I also found that I just don't really care about any of the main characters.

Ah well. The search for another sci-fi/fantasy show to watch continues...
