I finally coughed up the $45+ for these three CD's on 2 discs, and I'm glad that I did.

I'm sort of an oddball for my age group; a huge fan of the so-called Great American Songbook even as a kid, loving Nat King Cole singing Ramblin' Rose, while still devouring everything from the Supremes (discovered when I was in 5th grade) onward. When I first heard Linda Ronstadt singing Different Drum with the Stone Poneys as a 12-year-old, I thought she had a voice not meant for blasting out rock songs, even though I still love Heat Wave and Poor Poor Pitiful Me.

She has covered a little bit of everything throughout her career, and I'm happy to finally invest in her covers of the songs that my parents loved. Her voice is light, not thin (there's a huge difference), delicately but assuredly delivering the lyrics in a crystal-clear line. And then every now and then, just when you've let her slide into comfy background music, she opens up the volume and that vibrato and just flat hits it. (A complete and utter contrast to, let's say, Celine Dion, who has great lungs but apparently lacks any kind of volume knob or understanding of how to caress a song, rather than using it as an assault weapon.) When she does that, you realize how restrained the rest of her singing has been, and it makes me smile.

Matching this tastefully restrained but perfect vocal delivery is Nelson Riddle's accompaniment. It's not heavy-handed, saccharine, or any of the other versions of overkill that turns so many of these songs into schlock. This is a sophisticated approach to this music, perfectly complementing the subtle and often ironic lyrics that are the hallmark of this generation of American music.

So no, you're not getting Sarah Vaughan or Dinah Washington here, but it's not that crazy-far away from an Ella Fitzgerald feel on the few upbeat songs --an affectionate, flirty homage to such songs as Can't We Be Friends. (Agree with the other reviews that wished for more of the uptempo songs.)

If you're looking for a good collection of the tunes that you've heard on and off throughout your life, tastefully sung and masterfully arranged, and ohmigod, you can actually hear and learn the lyrics, I'm happy to recommend this set. I will be recording it for my 85-year-old mom, who actually prefers instrumental over vocal, but is nevertheless happy to hear "her" music once again. If only it had included "Mr. Lucky," my dad's song...

I don't know how Linda came to team up with Nelson Riddle to record the three albums that make up this double CD, but it was a truly inspired pairing. A few of these songs are famous, particularly When I fall in love and When you wish upon a star, but many of them will only be known to those familiar with the songs of the twenties, thirties and forties.

With Nelson Riddle and his orchestra providing the backing, Linda mostly sings lush ballads. I list some of the songs with their original hit-makers - note that where a song was a hit for several artists, only the biggest is given - which is not necessarily the most famous. In some cases, a cover version was a bigger hit a few years later. For example, Bewitched was a minor hit in 1941 for Leo Reisman, but six versions hit the top ten in 1950. Five others charted higher than Doris Day, but her version is the one you are most likely to come across. On the other hand, When I fall in love was originally a hit for Doris Day, but Nat King Cole had a huge British hit with the song.

What's new (Bing Crosby)
Someone to watch over me (Gertrude Lawrence)
I don't stand a ghost of a chance with you (Bing Crosby)
What'll I do (Paul Whiteman)
Skylark (Dinah Shore)
Mean to me (Ruth Etting)
You took advantage of me (Paul Whiteman)
Sophisticated lady (Duke Ellington)
My old flame (Guy Lombardo)
You go to my head (Larry Clinton)
But not for me (Harry James)
I get along without you very well (Red Norvo)
Am I blue (Ethel Waters)
I love you for sentimental reasons (Nat King Cole)
Straighten up and fly right (Andrews sisters)
Little girl blue (Margaret Whiting)

Linda and Nelson's choice of songs is impeccable. Perhaps they would have continued to record together, but Nelson died in 1985 following years of poor health - given his health, the quality of these recordings is even more remarkable.

Excellent ! I've always been curious about Linda's albums of 'standards' and I recently took the plunge. I bought the CD that has all of Linda's standard songs, all in one package....and it is great. I tried to think of all the artists' in the 'pop-rock' industry that have produced an album of classic tracks and I came up with a list of "the late great Harry Nilsson, Rod Stewart, Paul McCartney, Carly Simon, Barry Manilow, and I'm sure I'm missing quite a few, but these singers come to mind first. There are many surprises on Linda's "Round Midnight". I never knew she recorded the Disney classic, "When you wish upon a Star". or even "What'll I Do?" , also recorded by Nilsson. Some of the songs will bring you to tears, "My Funny Valentine" and some I honestly wasn't familiar with, such as "Mean to me" and "But Not for me". No, Linda doesn't rock out with this release, but on "Round Midnight", she doesn't have to. It's all about Linda's magnificent voice and Nelson Riddles' arrangements. With two hours worth of music, there's a generous helping of Linda singing her heart out with the great American songbook. If you're looking for her to sing, "You're No Good", and her classic rockers, this is not the collection for you. If you want to hear Linda's beautiful voice and some classic songs, sit back and relax, you'll enjoy the journey.

This was a box set double CD. It was in the original CD case and contained all the original inserts and covers. The CD's themselves were in like new condition, and each song played perfectly. It was just as advertised from the seller. These were really like new at a much better price. Excellent!!!

This marvelous album has been out for decades and only recently is no longer being made. So what happens next?
Now it is a collectors item and the price for a new copy skyrockets. Nevertheless, whatever you have to pay is worth the price. For a used copy in excellent condition, I had to pay $75. This album will be her greatest achievement.

Well, I guess you can say that LINDA RONSTADT can sing just about anything and this 2cd collection of the three albums she did with Nelson Riddle does not disappoint. Exactly the thing to play and have a Glass of wine with after work. My favorites are When You Wish Upon a Star, Crazy He Calls Me, What's New, ,Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered and I Get Along without You Very Well. I was fortunate in the fact I received Japanese Cd s made by Sanyo and the sound quality is Remarkable.
Everyone should own this set as it is a True Classic and I play it over and over!

An absolute masterpiece but it is crying out for Rhino to repackage and remaster it. The packaging and liner notes are very 90s ish with few pages in the booklet and the print is too small to be read comfortably. There is no artwork from the original albums. While I think about it, few, if any of her Elektra / Asylum CDs have been digitally remastered, other than on compilations and box sets, so come on Rhino and do what you do best.
