DescriptionPolytechnic University researchers say for the first time since 2012, students aged 12 to 18 had the lowest average happiness score among all age groups.

Dr Simon Lam, who conducted the study, said such a finding was rare even in other countries, as previous studies showed young people were generally happier than adults because they had fewer things to worry about.

Researchers invited 1,827 people last month to score their happiness on scale ranging from 0 to 10.

They found overall that Hong Kong people's happiness levels barely improved from last year, when the city was gripped by social unrest.

Respondents gave themselves an average score of 6.16, which is just 0.01 higher than last year’s figure.

Sylvia Chan from HK WeCare, which commissioned the study, said young people may have felt unhappy with the government and upset about disrupted schooling:

"I think because of Covid-19, the school suspensions contributed a lot [to] the emotion burden for students,” she said. “Students would think [they are] being locked up at home and cannot see their classmates and cannot go out and play – it can be one of the reasons that made them unhappy."

Female respondents were less happy overall than male respondents.

Researchers said that was a reversal of the usual trend where men normally scored lower on happiness than women, as they tended to be more repressed given stereotypical gender roles.

They said during the pandemic, women may have had to spend more time doing housework and taking care of children, and this may have increased the pressure on them.

The survey also found 46 percent of respondents showed signs of moderate to severe depression – around six percentage points higher than last year.

Researchers also asked respondents to rate their satisfaction with various external factors that could affect their happiness, such as government policy, the economy, living environment, the media, healthcare, and law and order.

They found that people gave the lowest scores to factors such as politics and society, government policy and trust in the government, while the city’s housing problems became less of a concern to many people.

They said the results showed that the government’s performance left a lot to be desired, adding that authorities should listen more to the people.

But researchers said even with unpleasant external factors, people could still strive to live a happier life through developing more positive values and caring more about society and others.

DescriptionAfter months of suspended classes and stunted social lives amid the ongoing pandemic, children and teens are Hong Kong’s unhappiest people this year, a survey has found.
Working on a scale of zero to 10, the non-profit group HK.WeCARE has determined the city’s overall happiness index this year to be 6.16, a tiny increase from last year’s 6.15, but still a substantial drop from 6.54 in 2018 and 6.4 in 2017.
While the city was rocked by months of often-violent anti-government protests starting in June of 2019, researchers said they believed the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic was the biggest cause of unhappiness this year, with Hongkongers shut in by travel bans and everyday life impeded by local social-distancing measures.
“People are more unhappy about the impact of Covid-19, which changed every aspect of society and life,” survey leader Dr Simon Lam Ching, an assistant professor at Polytechnic University’s school of nursing, said on Monday.

DescriptionStudents were the most unhappy group due to long periods of school suspensions amid the pandemic, an annual poll on Hong Kong's happiness levels and mental health shows. The poll, conducted by Polytechnic University's School of Nursing and commissioned by non-profit group HK.WeCare, interviewed more than 1,800 people online last month to score their happiness on a scale of zero to 10. Results found that the "happy index" was 6.16 points, similar to last year's 6.15 points. The poll aimed to study and analyze happiness levels, psychological factors, environmental factors and depression. TS Channel More>> Students aged 12 to 18 were the most unhappy group, with an index of 5.87 points, while those who were 55 years old or above were the happiest, with an index of 6.61 points. "Students were usually the happiest group of all, but they became the most unhappy in this year's survey, which is rare," said HK.WeCare cochair Sylvia Chan May-kuen. "Such a situation is related to school suspensions, when students were cut out of social activities, disrupting life patterns, so that physical and mental states will inevitably be affected," Chan said, suggesteing schools enhance mental health education for students as well as communication between students and teachers. Interviewees were also asked about 10 qualities of life, including satisfaction with politics, the economy and the environment. Of the 10 qualities, the lowest scores were "government governance" (3.03 points), "degree of trust in government handling" (3.04 points) and "politics and society" (3.31 points). Young people aged 35 or below were more dissatisfied with the three items, compared to other age groups. Another cochair, Tik Chi-yuen, said the performance of the government was also closely related to the mood and happy index. "The survey shows that the young are dissatisfied with the government, and the future of society belongs to them," Chan added. "The government needs to reflect more on how to have young people's trust and should care more about their views and voices when it comes to governance." Female respondents were less happy than males, which was contrary to the usual results of past years. More than 45 percent of respondents had mild to severe depression, an increase from last year.
