The 798 Art Zone in Beijing doesn't disappoint! it's huge, I'm not even sure you can see it all in one day so I'd definitely plan a return visit. This was my second time here and I still can't wait to go back. Tons of unique galleries with an emphasis on contemporary and modern art, much of it re-imagined traditional Asian and Chinese art. Plenty of restaurants, cafes, ice cream shops to keep your hunger at bay. one horrible disappointment: DO NOT get lured into the "3D Wizard of Oz" exhibit. there's no 3D, the video was stupid and boring and we, along with at least half the audience, walked out. btw, the Immersive Van Gogh exhibit was here. I'm not sure if it's permanent, but I saw it in SF and also here and loved it just as much. Don't miss the opportunity to see it, if not here, somewhere! A huge I mean huge industrial complex has been converted into shops galleries bars and restaurants. Full of beautifully dressed people, trains, chimneys, steel and concrete housing stunning art to suit all tastes. Or just marvel at some people’s creativity and tastes. Lots of street art too. We went late in the day in December so we only saw a few things and one exhibit. I think this would be a good place for the right person and especially good if you found an exhibit you wanted to see. When we went there was a Man Ray exhibit but it was small and a little overpriced at 150 RMB per person. A bonus for the Man Ray exhibit is that we got a beer coupon for a nearby craft beer bar!
Expect to spend a couple of hours here and I would recommend going in the early afternoon so you get some daylight to wander a bit and find something open that you would like to see. It is easy to Didi here but we found it was tricky to get out of the area.

The area is absolutely huge. We spent hours and only scratched the surface. A huge I mean huge industrial complex has been converted into shops galleries bars and restaurants. Full of beautifully dressed people, trains, chimneys, steel and concrete housing stunning art to suit all tastes. Or just marvel at some people’s creativity and tastes. Lots of street art too. This is a huge space dedicated to art scene in Beijing. It's very nice to explore and soak in the vibes.
Some down points for us (nothing too serious):
- shops there have different opening hours, some open after 2pm, some closed at 4pm etc so our visit at 12pm was awfully awkward as some places are not open
- there's not a lot of food options inside so make sure you have some food before coming over
- the area is quite far off the metro; I believe the nearest one is under construction, so it was quite a walk into the premise for us, and the cab out was stuck in heavy traffic for a while

The whole art zone at 798 is huge. However cars are allowed to drive in so walking around is not that comfortable. Plenty of art studios and boutiques there. Lots of cafes too. Lovely to spend a whole day there!

Art galleries are scattered around the place. It has a rustic feel to it because of old factory buildings. Walking around can get a bit uncomfortable under the sun, if weather is nice then its ok. If one is not into art then the place does'nt have much else to offer.

The works of art are amazing and continue to improve as the expertise of the artists increases. After touring the area, we stop for tea at the area's spacious teahouse.

Having a wall writer cousin in the family, I’ve come to appreciate many more forms of art. I was a little surprised to find such an area in Beijing, but truly, China is becoming a world leader in many fields. Freedom of expression. The area has many nice galleries, art shops, cafes, restaurants, and more.

Incredible !
I might be repeating me yet it has to be said.
Before arriving in China we had all the expected prejudices.
Hard core Communism, Maoism, totalitarianism, stern uniforms, stern faces, the red book of Mao, uniformity, conformity, dull outfits, grey colors everywhere, and of course... police everywhere...
How WRONG we were !
How far we were from China of today.
And 798 Art Zone is the quintessence of this reality we discovered there.
Nothing there is whatsoever connected to what we thought would be China.
Here, in this "Art Zone" you'll feel like in Beaubourg district in Paris or in any other anti-conformist artistic quarter of any western country.
It is literally stunning.
Just look at the pictures I have attached, as I usually do, so you can really understand what I mean.
There is a true feeling of artistic freedom.
As always you can find there Starbuck but also many other Cafes or eateries.
We were lucky enough to have good weather so it was a real pleasure to walk between the galleries, stopping quite often to enjoy modern as well as traditional Chinese art.
But most of all we enjoyed seeing the young Chinese with gears or make up of all possible colors... including Gothic (did write it correctly ?).
Our guide, Duddi Zion took us there on the last day and the last hours of our trip and he was definitely right. It would have been a shame to miss it.
After Tienanmen square, the Forbidden City, the Summer, Heaven and Lama temple, this is a totally different experience which is a must to complete a better understanding of China of today.

Lots of amazing memorabilia on exhibit. The Beijing showing began in July and ends in November 2022. Especially exciting for young kids, while also very interesting for adults of all ages.

After a long walk from Lufthansa center and after getting lost two times I finally found this trendy art district in Beijing. And it was surely worth the walk! The area is totally different to all the other places in Beijing. It is an old factory district, where everything has been renovated and the factory rooms now play as galleries, studios, art rooms, restaurants, bars and cafes. I didn't care too much for the art, although some was quite interesting, the area itself is really worth visiting, even for people who don't care about contemporary art. And the galleries are free! It reminded me of Soho in New York. I spent there three hours, but would've loved to stay longer. The district has a great feeling, it's really non-Chinese in a positive way, a great getaway. And probably the cosiest cafes in the city. I warmly recommend 798 District to everyone! Definitely will go back soon. But next time I'll take a taxi, it's quite far and no subway stations near.

Agree with previous comments. Each gallery has its own schedule. Unfortunately, there is not a single resource (that I can find) where you can find this information in advance unless you know exact gallery you are going to and try to find it online

Is there a place to leave luggage? We will be visiting on our way to the airport for our departure. Is it safe to ask a taxi to stop there and to watch our bags for a couple hours or is there a place we can store luggage while we walk around? Thank you.

I believe that many of the galleries are open at night, and there are a number of terrific bars and restaurants that will be open at night. I do not think the museum is, however, open at night.

I was there earlier in the day, not past 6. But it is a big place, with lots of restaurants and other businesses that will be open late. Many of the galleries may be closed by 6, but there will be a lot to see.
