Asking "why" would've been a more concise and accurate question, but it got removed due to the title not matching the highly specific posting criteria here. I've been on reddit since 2012 and this is probably the stupidest rule I've seen in all those years lol. Plus I need to add a link so my post doesn't get removed. Which isn't a very reasonable rule either. So here's a picture of him so mods are happy: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%81lvaro_Morata#/media/Datei:Alvaro_Morata_2019-cropped_(cropped).jpg
What is going on with Álvaro Morata getting hated on/booed/threatened by fans of the Spanish national football team?

Answer: The last years he's been seriously out of form and lacking confidence (Arguably ever since he got to and left Chelsea) . In many footballing countries, football is life. Spain is one of those countries. To be a great player you can't just put up numbers you have to come through in big moments and consistently score. He is one of those players where he seems to squander a lot of opportunities. Someone from spain can explain a lot better but that's the basic idea. Spain wanted a fall guy because they didn't plan on having a great tournament.
And specifically today, he missed their last penalty in a shoot out against Italy, leading to them missing out on the Euro final. Despite making the equalising goal earlier in the match and not being the only player to miss, most anger is being directed toward him for the loss.
Ah damn.. thats so unfortunate. I saw him get the equalising goal against Italy tonight, but didnt watch the OT + pens cause I desperately have to study for an exam.
Always remember that the word Fan comes from Fanatic...
I mean not only that but he had missed 11 shots in a row so eyes were already on him
Thanks! I wasn't really familiar with the current spanish team before the euros this year. Last time I watched a similar tournament Iker Casillas was still goalie. He scored a lot so I assumed he was one of their better players.
And even if he isn't, threatening and harassing him for a low performance is vile.. if he really was that bad, in a football nation like Spain surely someone else would've taken his spot already?
Some managers choose players out of favour to boost their confidence and to gain a players trust in their system. Many people think jadon sancho should be starting over raheem sterling for england but southgate chose sterling. IT has worked out for him.
You have to remember it is hard for some players and coaches to adjust themselves from club to international football. Maybe that is why morata was chosen. Or maybe tactically he offers more direct pace. Who knows. Enrique is a good coach who maybe thought he could get extra motivation and intensity from a player struggling.
Also,
Morata is actually spains all time leading scorer at euro's. But many of the goals or garbage time goals are goals in games that don't matter.
This comment is very accurate, but as a Spaniard who has followed the team, a couple things could be added:
TL/DR: Bad performance, media campaign in his favour, bad attitude towards the fans. He performed bad but still acted arrogant and played the victim.
-
The selection of players called to the national team was a little controversial. For example, Iago Aspas has been the best Spanish striker in the league consistently (on pair with Gerard Moreno) and he wasn't even called. Morata (who is generally considered as pretty mediocre and overrated) was not only called but also in the starting XI. This surprised a lot of us in the first match who expected Moreno to be our main striker, and he performed horribly. We got a draw against Sweden and didn't play a good match.
-
A lot of people criticised him for his bad performance, and in response media held a huge campaign in his favour (it's said that his father is a big fish in one of the main media groups in Spain, but I don't know about that). Anyway, this campaign was ridiculous: on one hand, Morata was praised for absolutely anything he did by narrators and journalists to the point that it became a meme. On the other hand, media literally insulted fans that criticized Morata, calling them "stupids".
-
Morata didn't accept any criticism and antagonized fans: after a horrible performance against Poland, some journalist asked him about fans criticising him and he just said "let them talk, I don't care what people says, talking is free in this country". Previous to this he also said "fans criticized Torres too, so you can imagine their intellectual level".

After another bad performance against Slovakia (despite the team winning 5-0) he played a solid match against Croatia and Switzerland (nothing crazy, but a good match nonetheless). People calmed down since we got further than expected and we started to dream about the trophy. However, yesterday he missed the last penalty and everything just came to the surface again.
Sorry for the terribly long comment. In conclusion, I'd say that, on one hand he performed badly and didn't care, acted as an arrogant prick, and antagonized the fans (who have suffered a lot because Covid hit us really hard). On the other hand, media held this ridiculous campaign praising him and insulting his detractors.
Good to know. In the us we don’t get the tabloids or inside information. But as a Chelsea fan I lived the whole record signing and underwhelming performances. It’s hard for a player to overcome those confidence issues. That I felt bad for and especially last night after missing his pk. But after the media info I feel less bad.
Yeah, I wouldn't have such a negative opinion towards him if it wasn't for that. It feels like he was never that good, not in Real Madrid, not in Chelsea, Atlético or Juve. But somehow he managed to get to all those elite teams for brutal amounts of money. Maybe we are all stupid and can't understand his "invisible work" as the media calls it here, who knows.
When I first saw him play I thought shit he's going to be really really good. His pace was top level, and his runs are clever and smart. Linking up with a smart attaching midfielder or deep lying midfielder makes him look good as long as they play good passes. I think club after club thought they could either turn his finishing around or get his confidence back. He finds himself in so many dangerous positions and then just wastes it.
Yeah, it's a shame because he really has good moves and he's able to make good runs and create spaces. That's probably the hard thing to find in a striker, and it's really valuable. However, a striker that can't seize the chances really has a problem.
As a striker, his scoring record is mediocre and doesn’t seem to justify the two times he’s moved for fees in the region of £60m or the £10m per season Juventus are paying to loan him, offset against another eventual £55m fee.
On the same note how when ever Argentina loses anything, everyone just blames Messi.
