Andy Staples Reveals Major College Football Program That Is 'A Wild Card' In 2024

The conference realignment this past offseason was one of the craziest in college football history. Major programs like the Oklahoma, Texas, Oregon, and USC are no longer in the conferences they once dominated.

Now the question is which of these teams are ready to make an immediate impact in their new conferences. Most would probably say Texas in the SEC or Oregon in the Big Ten.

While On3's Andy Staples likes those teams, he thinks Oklahoma is the wildcard as the Sooners make the transition to the SEC.

"Oklahoma is a big mystery right now," Staples said. "Defensively, probably the deepest they've been in years. They love their quarterback in Jackson Arnold. They let Dillon Gabriel walk. I understand why."

Jackson Arnold

Oklahoma quarterback Jackson Arnold throws a pass in the Alamo Bowl vs. the Arizona Wildcats.

Staples mentions his concern for Oklahoma's offensive line. They lost a lot, including Tyler Guyton, a recent first-round pick in the NFL Draft. The Sooners were able to piece things together in the transfer portal, but Staples wants to know if they can hold up.

For Staples, he feels Oklahoma's floor and their ceiling are miles apart.

"My floor is actually still 6-6," Staples said. "I don't think there is a world that they don't make a bowl game. But my ceiling is a CFP (College Football Playoff) berth, and I believe anything in between because I don't know."

Many people seem to feel this way about Oklahoma. They see the talent and depth defensively and are led by one of the greatest defensive minds in the sport. But they also see an offensive line that is a major question mark with a young quarterback.

If Oklahoma can figure out how to have an average to good offensive line that can give Arnold some time, it could be a huge year for them. But if they don't, not only could it be a bad year it could also be detrimental to Arnold's future.
