BALTIMORE — Daulton Varsho robbed a homer with his glove, hit one with his bat and then drove in the go-ahead run in the 10th inning with a groundball to lift the Toronto Blue Jays to a 3-2 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Monday night.

The Blue Jays overcame two home runs by Adley Rutschman, tying the game on Varsho’s solo shot in the eighth and then prevailing in extra innings. Ernie Clement led off the 10th with a bunt single off Jacob Webb (0-2) that moved the automatic runner to third.

After a popout, Varsho’s grounder was fielded by diving second baseman Jorge Mateo, but the Orioles — who had already turned three double plays to get out of significant jams — had no chance to pull off another.

Jordan Romano (1-0) pitched the ninth and 10th. The Orioles moved their automatic runner to third on Anthony Santander’s leadoff flyout, but Colton Cowser struck out looking. Jordan Westburg drew a walk, and slumping center fielder Cedric Mullins hit a routine grounder on the first pitch to end it.

Bo Bichette had three hits and a walk for the Blue Jays.

DETROIT — Spencer Torkelson hit a two-run home run to highlight a three-run outburst in the eighth inning as Detroit rallied for a win over Miami.

After Miami got a two-run homer from Otto Lopez in the top of the eighth to take a 5-3 lead, Wenceel Pérez doubled off Anthony Maldonado (0-1) with one out and scored on Andy Ibáñez’s base hit. Matt Vierling struck out before Torkelson hit a 1-2 slider 446 feet over the Miami bullpen in left-center field.

The homer came one day after Torkelson, who hit 31 homers last year, got his first of the season in a 9-3 loss to the Houston Astros.

The Tigers won for the third time in 10 games, while Miami dropped to 2-8 in their last 10.

Alex Faedo (3-1) got the win despite allowing Lopez’s third homer of the season in the top of the eighth. Jason Foley pitched a perfect ninth for his 10th save.

ATLANTA — Zack Short made the most of his first start with Atlanta by breaking a scoreless tie with a <a href="https://twitter.com/i/status/1790187528462663872">run-scoring double</a> in the sixth and the Braves spoiled another strong start by Chicago rookie Shota Imanaga to beat the Cubs 2-0.

Short, who filled in at third base while Austin Riley was held out with tightness in his left side, lined a pitch from right-hander Hayden Wesneski (2-2) into the right field corner to drive in Travis d’Arnaud, who doubled with two outs.

Ronald Acuña Jr. followed with a single to left field to drive in Short for a 2-0 lead.

Imanaga threw five scoreless innings, extending his team record to eight consecutive starts to begin his career without allowing more than two runs. Imanaga stranded two baserunners in the second and third innings and left the bases loaded in the fourth.

Imanaga had eight strikeouts and lowered his majors-leading ERA to 0.96 despite giving up seven hits with three walks.

BOSTON — Amed Rosario hit a two-run triple during Tampa Bay’s three-run first inning and the Rays beat Boston.

Rosario added an RBI double and Yandy Díaz had three hits for the Rays, who are in a stretch of 13 straight games vs rival AL East clubs.

Boston’s Tyler O’Neill hit his 10th homer, a three-run shot. The Red Sox had won their last two games.

Rays starter Zach Eflin (3-4) gave up three runs on six hits in five innings. Their bullpen took over from there, with three relievers holding Boston to two singles.

NEW YORK — Bryson Stott hit a leadoff homer in the ninth against All-Star closer Edwin Díaz and delivered the tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the 10th inning as the MLB-leading Philadelphia beat the New York Mets.

The Phillies trailed 4-2 before Díaz gave up Stott’s homer and hit Alec Bohm with a pitch with the bases loaded and two outs.

Bryce Harper, the automatic runner to start the 10th, took third on a wild pitch by Sean Reid-Foley (1-1) and scored easily on Stott’s long fly out to right.

Orion Kerkering (1-0) threw a perfect ninth and José Alvarado earned his eighth save with a 1-2-3 ninth, stranding automatic runner DJ Stewart at second.

Starter Cristopher Sánchez gave up three runs and struck out five in 5 2/3 innings for the Phillies.

MILWAUKEE — Bryan Reynolds went 5 for 5 with a homer and two doubles, Mitch Keller threw six shutout innings and Pittsburgh defeated Milwaukee.

Pittsburgh’s Jack Suwinski and Yasmani Grandal hit two-run homers.

Jake Bauers delivered his first career grand slam for the Brewers, who nearly came all the way back after trailing 7-2 in the eighth inning.

Milwaukee’s rally began after an error by shortstop Oneil Cruz helped the Brewers load the bases with nobody out in the eighth. Bauers capitalized by sending a 3-2 sinker from Josh Fleming over the right-field wall.

Andruw Monasterio drew a one-out walk from Hunter Stratton to put the potential tying run on base. As William Contreras looked at a third strike for the second out, Monasterio stole second and advanced to third when Grandal’s throw sailed into center field.

Stratton preserved Pittsburgh’s lead by striking out Christian Yelich. Reynolds then provided some insurance by leading off the ninth with a 421-foot blast to center against Joel Payamps to cap his first career five-hit game.

David Bednar retired the side in order in the ninth to earn his eighth save in 11 opportunities.

HOUSTON — Alex Bregman homered twice and had a season-high four RBIs to lead Houston to a win over Oakland.

Bregman homered off Oakland starter Ross Stripling (1-7) in the fourth inning, reminiscent of the homer he hit off Stripling in the 2018 All-Star Game. Bregman homered again in the seventh off Mitch Spence. Bregman entered Monday with just one homer in 144 at-bats this season but caught fire and had his sixth career multihomer game.

Bregman later added a double in the eighth that scored Trey Cabbage and Jeremy Peña to put Houston up 7-2. He entered Monday hitting .167 in May and .201 on the season.

The Astros have now won four of their last five, including a series win in Detroit. Oakland has lost four of five.

ARLINGTON, Texas — José Ramírez had a pair of two-run singles and reached base five times as the Cleveland beat Texas and sent the Rangers to their first four-game losing streak of the season.

Five Cleveland pitchers combined for the four-hit shutout of the defending World Series champions. The AL Central-leading Guardians have won 14 of their last 24 games.

Ramírez drove in two runs with singles in the eighth and ninth innings. He walked twice and also reached on a fielding error by Corey Seager in the first inning.

Texas’ Michael Lorenzen allowed one hit over seven innings, pitching no-hit ball for 5 1/3 innings, while striking out four and walking four.

José Leclerc (3-2) followed Lorenzen and allowed three runs on two hits and one walk.

SEATTLE — George Kirby allowed three hits over seven shutout innings, Luke Raley hit a two-run homer and drove in three runs, and Seattle beat the Kansas City.

Kirby (4-3) had been bothered by a sore knee, but was terrific. He pitched out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the first inning after hitting a pair of batters. He gave up Bobby Witt Jr.’s first inning single, then didn’t allow another hit until Dairon Blanco reached on an infield single in the fifth.

Kirby struck out six, walked none. It was the third time this season he pitched at least six innings and didn’t allow a run.

Raley’s second homer of the season traveled an estimated at 432 feet and came after Cal Raleigh doubled on the first pitch of the second inning from Kansas City starter Brady Singer. Raley also <a href="https://x.com/lindseywasson/status/1790214531387641891">appeared to break</a> – or have come unscrewed — the celebratory trident used by the Mariners to celebrate home runs.

Raleigh and Raley added an RBI singles an inning later. Raleigh’s was a 410-foot shot that tipped off Blanco’s glove as he jumped at the fence. Julio Rodríguez scored, but Jorge Polanco had to wait near first base and could only advance 90 feet, leaving Raleigh with possibly the longest single of his career.

Ty France added a two-run homer in the eighth inning, his third of the season.

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Nolan Arenado homered and Matt Carpenter had a tying two-run single during St. Louis’ eight-run seventh inning, and the Cardinals rallied from a four-run deficit for a victory over the Los Angeles Angels.

Iván Herrera had two hits during the Cardinals’ massive rally, and he capped it with a two-run single as St. Louis sent 14 hitters to the plate against the Angels’ best relievers.

Kevin Pillar had an early two-run homer and a late RBI single for the Angels, who have lost four of five during their homestand to drop to 5-15 at the Big A this season.

Masyn Winn and Nolan Gorman had two hits apiece for the Cardinals, who won back-to-back games after a seven-game skid. St. Louis is in Anaheim for only the third series in the franchises’ history, and the first since May 2016.

Matthew Liberatore gave up four runs on five hits and two walks while failing to get out of the fourth inning in the reliever’s second start of the year for St. Louis.

Kyle Leahy (1-1) pitched 2 2/3 innings of hitless relief to earn his first major league victory.

SAN DIEGO — Elehuris Montero had two hits and three RBIs to lead Colorado to a victory over the San Diego and extend their winning streak to five games.

Colorado relievers walked the bases loaded in both the eighth and ninth innings, but the Padres failed to score in either inning. San Diego drew 11 walks in the game and stranded nine runners in the loss.

The Rockies are 4-16 away from home with eight games over the next 10 days on their current road trip. The win snapped Colorado’s five-game losing streak at Petco Park, dating to the opening series of the 2023 season.

Colorado’s Jalen Beeks walked the bases loaded in the ninth, but didn’t give up a run and earned his fourth save. He got Manny Machado to hit into a game-ending double play. Rockies right-fielder Jake Cave made an outstanding diving catch on the run to take away a possible hit by Luis Arraez in the inning.

Rockies reliver Justin Lawrence also had control difficulties in the eighth, walking three batters. But, he was able to get out of the jam without giving up a run as he coaxed Luis Campusano to hit into a flyout to preserve the Rockies’ 5-4 lead.

The Padres generated all their offense on home runs. Jurickson Profar hit a two-run shot and Xander Bogaerts and Jackson Merrill added solo homers.

SAN FRANCISCO — Will Smith hit a <a href="https://x.com/SportsNetLA/status/1790239745433362438">two-run double</a> in the 10th inning to lead the Los Angeles Dodgers to a win over San Francisco for their fourth straight victory this season over their rivals.

Mookie Betts hit his 50th career leadoff homer and Kiké Hernández added a pinch-hit homer in the seventh inning to tie the game at 4 for Los Angeles.

The Dodgers then won it in the 10th when Smith hit a drive to center field off Taylor Rogers (1-2) to give Los Angeles the lead.

Blake Treinen (1-0) picked pinch-runner Tyler Fitzgerald off of first as part of a scoreless ninth to get the win. J.P. Feyereisen got three outs for his first save as the Dodgers extended a franchise record by allowing four runs or fewer in 20 straight games.

Luis Matos, making his first start of the season in place of the <a href="https://apnews.com/article/jung-hoo-lee-giants-65ce24b6549c461b2fb644d3aad4eccc">injured Jung Hoo Lee</a>, provided the bulk of the offense for the Giants when he hit a first-pitch curveball into the left-field seats off Yoshinobu Yamamoto for a three-run homer that made it 3-1 in the second.

Yamamoto then retired the next 12 batters before running into trouble in the sixth with back-to-back walks with one out. He retired the next batter before giving up an RBI single to Heliot Ramos that put the Giants up 4-3 and end Yamamoto’s night.

San Francisco starter Jordan Hicks allowed Betts’ leadoff homer and then only one other run in five innings, but got a no-decision when the bullpen couldn’t hold a 3-2 lead.

PHOENIX — Kevin Newman’s two-run single in the bottom of the ninth inning capped a four-hit night and gave Arizona a victory over Cincinnati Reds.

Newman had a pair of doubles and a single before coming to the plate in the ninth against Alexis Diaz (1-2), who had loaded the bases with a hit batsman and two walks. Newman lined the pitch to shallow right to score Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Gabriel Moreno.

Justin Martinez (1-0), the fifth Arizona pitcher of the game, picked up his first major league win.

The Reds have lost 11 of their last 12 games, including a three-game sweep by the Diamondbacks in Cincinnati last week.
