Anglo-Irish novelist Elizabeth Bowen discusses the importance of character to novels and the different ways that authors can create characterisation.
One of Bowen's most famous books is The Heat of the Day, published in 1948. The novel was later adapted for television by Harold Pinter.
The image above shows Elizabeth Bowen chatting with students at Bryn Maw college, Pennsylvania, in December 1956. She had no academic duties as part of her fellowship obligation for the college, other than to engage with students in gatherings and discussions.
