The following contains spoilers for Season 1 of Dead Boy Detectives, now streaming on Netflix.

Netflix's Dead Boy Detectives lives up to expectations with its mysteries, monsters and horror thrills. This series focused on two teenage ghosts, Edwin Paine and Charles Rowland, trying to run from Death, all while solving cases and helping fellow ghosts move on to the afterlife. Each episode tells its own story, putting them in various scenarios as sleuths.

However, the Dead Boy Detectives ending does see Edwin, Charles, Niko and Crystal fighting off a main enemy in Port Townsend, Washington. This is none other than Esther the Witch. Thankfully, they are successful, but while the finale is filled with closure, Season 1 does leave a few mysteries unturned.

8 What Happened to Edwin's Family in Dead Boy Detectives?

Dead Boy Detectives revealed Charles suffered abuse at the hands of his father. He forgave him, but his ghost still checked in to ensure the man wasn't mistreating Charles' mother. Clearly, family mattered a lot to Charles, hence why he stayed on Earth after he died and befriended Edwin. He loved Edwin's kind nature.

However, as much as family is a common theme, the truth isn't revealed about Edwin's family. His flashbacks only show bullies killing him at the same British boarding school due to a seance gone awry. Some are speculating Edwin's family is being kept for a possible Dead Boy Detectives Season 2, which could tie into him hiding his queerness in the early 1900s. Feeling ashamed, trying to hide his identity, or being chided by them could be why he doesn't talk about them much.

Dead Boy Detectives' Cat King, Explained
As Edwin Paine and Charles Rowland investigate supernatural cases in Dead Boy Detectives, they encounter the infamous Cat King. But who exactly is he?

Edwin's ritual in 1916 was conducted by Simon, who crushed on Edwin, but who reverted to toxic masculinity. Simon did so because he didn't want the other boys to know he liked Edwin. When they performed the sacrificial ritual, a demon named Sa'al rose up, killed them all and dragged Edwin to Hell.

Edwin eventually met with Simon in Hell, where Despair from The Sandman TV series was basking in his pain. Edwin took pity on Simon and forgave him for ruining his life. However, the show doesn't confirm where the other boys are or if they were punished. Should Dead Boy Detectives connect to The Sandman's possible angle of Hell's inmates being freed, maybe Edwin might see these ghosts someday and remind them of their sins.

6 Why Didn't The Boys Initially Take Esther Down in Dead Boy Detectives?

Esther the witch holds her cane in Dead Boy Detectives

The opening episode of Dead Boy Detectives has the ghost boys thwarting Esther's kidnapping ring. They got little Becky back from the witch, ensuring she couldn't feed the child to her giant snake. Esther abducted many and fed them to the serpent, which would then allow Esther to harness this grief and remain young. The show doesn't explain, however, why Edwin and Charles didn't put a permanent end to Esther.

The ghost detectives returned Becky to her family and moved onto new cases, but Esther was still free to snatch other children, especially girls. Crystal didn't even push for them to take her down permanently or find some way to bind her using their library. They could have even gotten relics and trinkets from Tragic Mick to imprison Esther. They knew about her snake too, so it's plot convenience that they forgot about her, which allowed her to hatch revenge.

Fans who enjoyed Dead Boy Detectives' supernatural thrills and murder mystery trappings will definitely want to check out these shows.

Monty was the crow Esther turned into her familiar: a handsome teen meant to seduce Edwin. Monty eventually lures them out to the woods, but Esther's plan to kill the boys fails. She takes it out on Monty, returning him to his bird form and torturing him. He does get vengeance by helping Charles on the mission to kill Esther. But once Esther is killed in the finale, the show never confirms what happened to Monty.

Everyone gets closure, but it's not seen if he roams free as a bird. Mick may have had potions to make him human again in his antiques shop, plus, Monty would have been a great help for the boys when they move back to their London office. It's very odd that the show forgets about Monty after he plays such a pivotal role in fighting the detectives, and then aiding them. With Monty finally understanding empathy and second chances, Season 2 could have him atone for his crimes with the witch.

4 Why Did Charles' Father Bully Him in Dead Boy Detectives?

Charles got bullied at school by xenophobes who hated people like him with South Asian heritage in 1989, but the series doesn't confirm why his father did the same at home. It's implied he saw Charles as weak, but it's uncertain if that's just his usual, natural perspective, or because he felt Charles should have fought back against bullies in the Netflix paranormal series.

There must be a reason Charles' father was like that, hating everything that happened to his son and everything the teenager did. Season 2 of Dead Boy Detectives would be a great ground to explore the full story. It feels like Charles was hiding extra stuff about his family. This would better pad why Charles would have thrown his father a second chance. Hopefully, there is closure to explain Charles' full backstory with the man down the line.

Dead Boy Detectives' Biggest Differences From the Comics
Netflix's Dead Boy Detectives makes a few changes to the Neil Gaiman source material and the later comics DC released with the teenage ghosts.

Crystal allowed a demon, David, to possess her body a few months prior to meeting the boys. He stole her memories, only for Crystal to regain them and learn that she used her telepathy and psychic abilities to lie, steal and hurt people. She wasn't a very nice person, whether in verbal arguments or fights. Crystal turns over a new leaf and becomes a hero within the agency. She also locks David away in a special plane where her ancestors reside.

It's very similar to the Djalia, a spiritual plane from the Black Panther franchise. She buries David there with the aid of her kin. However, it's unknown if all her ancestors discerned she wasn't a good person before. Crystal did unsavory things and operated selfishly, so one would assume they'd scold her about abusing her power. Her kin never brings that aspect of her life up, which does give a reborn Crystal a shot at a new way of living.

2 How Did The Tentacle Monster Find Brad & Hunter in Dead Boy Detectives?

Brad and Hunter stalk Edwin in Dead Boy Detectives

Brad and Hunter are two despicable ghosts who tried to trick Edwin and Charles to solve their murder. The heroes realize these boys were misogynists who abused girls. Once they solve their murders, a giant tentacle monster crawls up from the core of the Earth and drags Brad and Hunter to Hell.

It's kept secret who or what pointed the monster to the surface and these specific targets. The Night Nurse had the power to send a creature after Edwin and Charles, but she didn't send anyone for Brad or Hunter. It teases other agents of Hell working in the shadows. Whoever commanded these beasts definitely had a lot of sway and control.

1 Why Didn't Esther Sense the Intruders in Dead Boy Detectives?

Esther roams the streets in Dead Boy Detectives

Esther had enough of all the supernatural drama. She didn't want the agency snooping around her home again. However, Charles, Niko and Crystal snuck in to get Edwin back after the witch kidnapped him in the scary finale.

Esther has a sixth sense that allowed her to sense their intrusions before, but didn't on this occasion. Even if Monty didn't want to alert her, her supernatural alarm should have done the job. It doesn't, which allows the kids to conspire against her in the confines of her own home. Had Crystal used her psychic powers to mess with her mind or shield them, it would have made more sense.
