Peter Grant says Celtic should sanction £5 million deal for 'clinical' forward

Celtic fans will be hoping their side can race over the finish line in the Scottish Premiership before a big summer of transfer activity.

Of course, Brendan Rodgers could also win another Scottish Cup, which would seal a successful campaign for the Irishman back in charge at Parkhead.

One man who has been pivotal to Celtic maintaining their challenge in the league is Adam Idah, who arrived in January on loan from Norwich City to a low-key reception from some quarters.

Nevertheless, the Republic of Ireland international has gone on to net seven goals and register two assists inside 15 appearances across all competitions [Transfermarkt].

The realities of Idah signing a permanent deal at Parkhead are somewhat murky; however, recent reports have suggested Celtic would need to pay a baseline fee of at least £5 million to secure his signature.

Despite not having an option to buy present in his current agreement, Rodgers confirmed the Hoops would make a decision on his future at the end of the season.

He said: “I’m excited to work with him. He thrives on the pressure here and has a hunger to improve. So we’ll assess that at the end of the season. It’s not all in our hands.”

Deciding whether to bring in a loan player permanently comes with several potential caveats; nevertheless, there is also the fact that Idah wouldn’t need an acclimatisation period at Celtic in light of already proving his worth this season.

Former Hoops midfielder Peter Grant is of the opinion that his old side should look to deal in the Irishman, citing his hunger and scope to develop as main factors that could make a permanent transfer viable for Rodgers’ men.

He stated [Go Radio Football Show]: “I think so because it is very difficult to get any striker for that type of money (£5 million). I know he’s not a number nine, but Sammie Smzodics has been scoring a lot of goals, and now you are talking about £15-20m for him at Blackburn who are sitting near the bottom of the league.

“We know what Idah can do and what he offers. He is hungry to score goals and is young. I think if he keeps taking the chances, he can get better and more clinical, and you could end up getting big money again. Look what happened with Moussa Dembele.

And I think he is technically better than Moussa. They are different types of players, but technique I think he brings that to his game as well.”

Comparisons to Celtic icon Moussa Dembele may be a stretch; however, Idah has shown competence leading the line that has resulted in some telling strikes, including doubles against Hibernian and Motherwell alongside a clinically taken goal at Ibrox under severe pressure.

Looking towards the summer, if there is a deal to be done, Rodgers should give it great consideration as Idah has shown there is a place for him to thrive under his stewardship.
