Bollywood comedies like Madgaon Express

Bollywood hasn’t had a great run so far in 2024 with big-ticket films like Fighter and Bade Miyan Chote Miyan failing to deliver at the box office. However, there is one comic caper that managed to bring audiences to theatre screens and became a sleeper hit — Madgaon Express.

Madgaon Express, which is Kunal Kemmu’s directorial debut, stars Divyendu, Pratik Gandhi and Avinash Tiwary. The humorous storyline is centered on the misadventures of three friends — Dodo (Divyendu), Pinku (Pratik Gandhi) and Ayush (Avinash Tiwary) — who as adults fulfil their college dream of going to Goa. However, what awaits them is an insane “comedy of errors” situation as they get entangled with dangerous gangsters and a deadly drug cartel.

Madgaon Express has already claimed a spot in the evergreen Bollywood comedies, which no matter how many times you watch, you’ll laugh just as loud as the first time. This can be credited to the hysterical performances, particularly by Pratik Gandhi. The quirky storyline is non-stop hilarious with the witty dialogues penned by Kunal Kemmu.

Here are 7 laugh-out-loud Bollywood comedies like Madgaon Express on Amazon Prime Video that you can rewatch again and again:

No one makes comedies like Priyadarshan, and Hera Pheri is all the proof one needs. The Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty, Paresh Rawal, Tabu, Om Puri, and Gulshan Grover starrer is filled to the brim with iconic characters like Babu Bhaiya and Gangster Kabira, and the hilarious dialogues remain quote-worthy even after all these years. The Neeraj Vora-penned film follows a landlord and his two tenants, all of whom are in desperate need of money. When they encounter a ransom call due to a cross connection, they devise a plan to claim the ransom for themselves in order to solve their financial problems. Interestingly, Hera Pheri 3 is currently in the works.

Another cult Bollywood comedy that makes for a perfect “friends night” movie is Andaz Apna Apna which stars two Khan superstars – Aamir Khan and Salman Khan, alongside Raveena Tandon, Karisma Kapoor, Paresh Rawal and Shakti Kapoor. The rom-com movie is centered around two gold diggers who are trying to woo an heiress. However, to their utter surprise, the heiress has exchanged her identity with her secretary. What follows is a mad ride as one of them genuinely falls in love with the heiress, while the other guy falls for the secretary. What also makes Andaz Apna Apna a delightful rewatch is the supporting characters like Crime Master Gogo, Teja, Robert (Viju Khote) and Vinod (Shehzad Khan).

The Govinda-David Dhawan combo and comedies are a match made in cinematic heaven. The actor’s “No. 1” film series has incredible recall value for movie lovers, however, our personal pick remains Hero No. 1. Starring the superhit comedy pairing of Govinda and Karisma Kapoor, the hit film is a love story about two wealthy young individuals, who fall in love in Europe and eventually get married. However, a family feud tears them apart and in order to win over everyone’s hearts (especially his wife’s grandfather), the husband disguises himself as his wife’s family’s new servant. As expected, hilarity ensues. Hero No. 1 also stars Kader Khan and Paresh Rawal.

4. Golmaal

A comedy film series that showcased Ajay Devgn’s comic timing like no other. From all the blockbuster Rohit Shetty instalments, Golmaal is the OG movie that holds a special place in the list of the best Bollywood comedies of all time. Golmaal: Fun Unlimited, which also stars Tusshar Kapoor, Arshad Warsi, Sharman Joshi, Rimi Sen, and Paresh Rawal, revolves around four mischievous friends who find refuge in a blind couple’s home. One of them pretends to be the couple’s grandson from America, who is going to inherit their mysterious treasure chest. But the friends aren’t the only ones after the fortune, as gangsters also get involved in the mix. As witnessed in most Rohit Shetty films, the supporting characters truly shine equally as the lead cast, like Pandu Ranga (Vrajesh Hirjee), Vasooli (Mukesh Tiwari) and Sattu Supari (Siddharth Jadhav).

A blast from the past, Chupke Chupke is helmed by the iconic filmmaker Hrishikesh Mukherjee. The evergreen classic starring Dharmendra, Amitabh Bachchan, Sharmila Tagore, Jaya Bachchan, and Om Prakash, the film is centered on a newlywed husband, who disguises himself as his wife’s driver in order to play a prank on her highly intellectual brother in law. Moreover, his best friend pretends to be him and ends up falling for someone else, who tries to uncover all the secrets. The innocent prank gets funnier as more characters get involved in the mix.
