So I want to start using SL to hide my gmail address from people I don't trust but have to be in contact with - toxic family members. I considered using gmail aliases but it's apparently very easy for others to see your main address. My family is tech savvy, most of them work in IT, and I want to be sure they can't trace the mailbox linked to the SL alias I give to them.

Well that's the whole point of SL isn't it?
Just make a separate Gmail or Outlook account. I wouldn't trust SL to keep all traces hidden if you're going to be replying back and forth.
Only if you send a calendar invite. That's not protected.Â
