There is or there are in this sentence?

quick grammar check

Hi all, do I say There is a beautiful butterfly and a bird. or There are a beatiful butterfly and a bird.

Am I right to assume it's the latter, cause it's 2 things so need to use are?

They have different meanings.

"There is a beautiful butterfly and a bird" means that there is a beautiful butterfly; by the way, there's also a bird (but not necessarily beautiful).

"There are a beautiful butterfly and bird (in my garden)" means both are beautiful (and I would omit the second "a").
