First time playing through MGS1

MGS1 Spoilers

Holy shit I really do not enjoy this game. The presentation, music, story all really fucking cool and I totally see why this game pushed the envelope here.

But Jesus Christ the gameplay is just frustrating as all fuck. The amount of times I phased through guards when grabbing them and alerted them, especially in that fucking missile room. The aiming is absolutely horrible, I get that for the time it is what it is, but the fights where you randomly get 3 dudes dropped on you towards the end were an exercise in frustration, getting blasted constantly but i have to basically spray the whole screen horizontally to hit them.

I had to cheese sniper wolfs rematch with the nikita, trying to do it with the sniper made me want to eat my fucking controller. In the laser room with the PSG as well it felt like Snake would just snap rotate and hit the laser if you were even slightly imprecise with your diagonal input. The game seems like it’s fucking with you sometimes, like climbing the communication tower and one turret, 5 staircases, 2 turrets, 5 staircases, 3 turrets and so on. Not to mention running up and down just to have Otacon appear and tell me the elevator was working. Why the fuck was I wasting my time doing that? At least the MGS3 ladder segment is funny + awesome song.

Then I wasted all my rations on the elevator ride fights toward the end, walk into the next room with a radar block to get nailed by a turret. Fine, whatever. Walk over to the side of the room and there are invisible landmines on a fucking steel floor. Why? It genuinely feels like the game is fucking with you to keep on your toes but it’s just bloody annoying.

Yeah, I just wanted to rant and say while I’ve enjoyed the story, all the details on the levels and the interesting ideas that are used, I genuinely think I’ll never play this again. I’ve just been pissed off for about 60% off my playthrough.

Probably a total scrub opinion, I’ve played harder games and old archaic ones, this one is just annoying as fuck to play.

I made a little wallpaper from two screen shots at the end though so enjoy that at least. Snake is cool as a cucumber in this game.

" The amount of times I phased through guards when grabbing them and alerted them"

This is true, grabbing guards is borderline broken with the way guards can clip through you and cause an alert because you're now in their field of view even though they're already in your chokehold. You don't ever really need to use it though is the only excuse I can give.

The rest, eh, it is what it is. I can't speak for the combat scenarios, like, at this point I've played the game so often and know how to deal with the fights and boss battles that I'm fine but I will say, since you mention the gun cameras, the game kinda drops off in the second half gameplaywise, because now all you do is disable gun cameras with chaff grenades throughout most of the regular gameplay segments. Enemy guards disappear almost entirely.

The first half was definitely more enjoyable, it starts to drop off big time once Meryl gets sniped.
