India Heatwave Highlights News Updates: Punjab declares summer break in schools from May 21 to June 30; Himachal Pradesh adjusts school timings

    21 May 2024 | 12:01:32 AM IST
Himachal Heatwave Highlights News Updates: The Directorate of Higher Education in Himachal Pradesh has mandated alterations to school schedules in lower hill areas due to a heat wave alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for several districts. The heat wave has posed challenges for political campaigns in the state, affecting daytime activities.

Consequently, school timings in certain districts have been adjusted from 7:30 am to 1:00 pm to mitigate the impact of soaring temperatures, particularly in Kangra, Hamirpur, Una, Bilaspur, Solan's Baddi-Barotiwala-Nalagarh area, Poanta Sahib, Nahan in Sirmaur district, and Una.

Additionally, primary and pre-primary schools in Una district will remain closed on May 21-22 due to the intense heat, as per the directive from the district administration. In Kangra, classes will commence at 7:30 am and conclude at 1:00 pm, effective immediately. Outdoor activities are advised against, and arrangements for adequate drinking water for students are emphasized. Similarly, in Bilaspur district, school hours have been adjusted from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm starting from the following day.

The Himachal Road Transport Corporation has been urged to adjust bus timings accordingly. While most parts of the lower hills experienced scorching temperatures, Shimla district witnessed light showers in isolated areas.

However, slight relief was observed as maximum temperatures decreased marginally in several places compared to the previous day. The meteorological center in Shimla has issued a yellow alert for heat waves for the next four days, cautioning against potential health risks associated with prolonged exposure to high temperatures.

So that's an extraordinary transformation of a digital ecosystem. We have without question the most vibrant in terms of broad-based innovation ecosystem when it comes to Digital India... But the thing that I am most excited about is De-regulation in specific, strategic sectors. The De-regulation and opening of strategic sectors like Space, Defence, etc. have spurred innovation. Because of the ecosystem provided by the government in the last 10 years, India has become the top innovator in cutting-edge sectors like aerospace, space and defence, which was unthinkable in the past!"

Iran Helicopter Crash News Live: What we know about the crashed helicopter carrying Iran's president

Iran Helicopter Crash News Live: A Bell 212 helicopter carrying Iran's president and foreign minister crashed on Sunday, according to Iranian state media, as it flew through mountains in heavy fog. All are feared dead, an Iranian official said on Monday as search teams located the wreckage.

    • Bell Helicopter (now Bell Textron, a division of Textron Inc) developed the aircraft for the Canadian military in the late 1960s as an upgrade of the original UH-1 Iroquois. The new design used two turboshaft engines instead of one, giving it greater carrying capacity. The helicopter was introduced in 1971 and quickly adopted by both the United States and Canada, according to U.S. military training documents.
    • The Iranian model that crashed on Sunday was configured to carry government passengers. Bell Helicopter advertises the latest version, the Subaru Bell 412, for police use, medical transport, troop transport, the energy industry and firefighting. According to its type certification documents with the European Union Aviation Safety Agency, it can carry 15 people, including the crew.
    • Non-military organisations that fly the Bell 212 include Japan's Coast Guard; law enforcement agencies and fire departments in the United States; Thailand's national police; and many others. It is not clear how many Iran's government operates, but its air force and navy have a total of 10, according to FlightGlobal's 2024 World Air Forces directory.
    • The most recent fatal crash of a Bell 212 was in September 2023, when a privately operated aircraft crashed off the coast of the United Arab Emirates, according to the Flight Safety Foundation, a non-profit focusing on aviation safety. The most recent Iranian crash of the type was in 2018, killing four people, according to the organisation's database.

Hopes are fading that Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and his foreign minister have survived a helicopter crash in mountainous terrain and icy weather, an Iranian official said on Monday after search teams located the wreckage.

"President Raisi's helicopter was completely burned in the crash ... unfortunately, all passengers are feared dead," the official told Reuters.

Rescue teams fought blizzards and difficult terrain through the night to reach the wreckage in East Azerbaijan province in the early hours of Monday.
