LeBron James' Former Teammate Strongly Warns JJ Redick About Lakers Coaching Job
Former NBA guard JJ Redick has been rumored to be strongly in the running for the Los Angeles Lakers head coaching job. Redick, who hosts the Mind The Game podcast with Lakers star LeBron James, clearly has a strong relationship with the NBA's all-time leading scorer.
It is no secret that Redick's friendship with James has positively impacted his candidacy for this position, but is this a job that Redick truly wants?
During a recent appearance on NBA TV, Cleveland Cavaliers champion Channing Frye called this Lakers head coaching job a death sentence, and advised Redick against taking it for his first coaching position.
"I think it’s a death sentence," Frye said. "I think he’s jumping on a grenade… As a first-year coach, I wouldn’t recommend that job for anybody."
Frye, who won a championship with LeBron James in 2016, knows all that comes with a job like the one Redick could be walking into. Any team with James is expected to compete for a championship, and those expectations are only heightened with an organization like the Lakers. Frye knows this, having played with James in Cleveland, and having also played briefly for Los Angeles in 2018.
For Redick, he will immediately be tasked with getting the Lakers franchise back on track after a disappointing first round exit, which is a very difficult job for a first time NBA head coach.
