Nas Will Hold Interview With Robert De Niro On First Ever “De Niro Con”

Nas emerged as one of the iconic mafioso rappers of the 1990s, immersing himself in mobster imagery during the latter part of the decade. It’s no surprise that he holds a deep admiration for legendary mobster actor Robert De Niro. Although they haven’t collaborated on a project, Nas and De Niro have crossed paths multiple times. They are set to reunite at “De Niro Con,” a forthcoming festival celebrating the actor’s illustrious career. Organized by the Tribeca Film Festival, which De Niro co-founded, “De Niro Con” will take place from June 14–16 in New York, featuring Q&A sessions moderated by De Niro’s peers and fans. Nas will play a significant role in the event, having been selected to moderate a Q&A session between De Niro and director Martin Scorsese for a screening of their 1973 film Mean Streets.

This marks a full-circle moment for both Nas and De Niro, as Tribeca previously showcased the Nas documentary Time Is Illmatic in 2014. During the documentary’s after-party, Nas expressed gratitude to De Niro, stating that the actor portrayed scenes reminiscent of the rapper’s own experiences, saying, “I want to thank Robert De Niro. He plays me in the movies.” De Niro reciprocated the praise, admitting that he was not familiar with Nas’ music but expressing appreciation for the numerous references to him in the rapper’s work.

Nas’ “Street Dreams” video draws inspiration from the movie Casino, directed by Scorsese and starring De Niro. The Nas-led Firm album also sampled music from De Niro’s acclaimed role in Once Upon a Time in America. Furthermore, the 1998 film Belly, featuring Nas and DMX as lifelong criminal friends, shares similarities with the central dynamic in Mean Streets. Not to mention the numerous references to Goodfellas in Nas’ lyrics.

The Q&A session is scheduled for June 15 at the Beacon Theater.
