Uber passenger ejected in collision with fleeing driver during Southfield police pursuit

Officials say six people including driver are hospitalized

DETROIT – A Southfield Police Department pursuit led to a critical crash in Detroit.

The crash occurred when the driver ran a red light at Outer Drive and James Couzens Freeway on Monday, May 13, at 5:30 p.m. The driver collided with another vehicle heading westbound on Outer Drive.

Officials say they began the pursuit at 12 Mile Road and Northwestern Highway and continued south of Northwestern Highway into Detroit.

The Detroit Police Department is handling the investigation since the crash occurred in the city.

Detroit police say six people, including the driver and passenger of the fleeing vehicle, are hospitalized.

Officials say of the six, four are in serious condition, with one listed in critical condition and another one listed as unknown.

Police say the vehicle that collided with the fleeing driver was with Uber, which was carrying a woman passenger who was ejected.

Officials say the driver was in violation of parole for second-degree murder and possession of cocaine.

“The parole is wanted as a parole absconder and also for possession of cocaine, so that’s what led to the pursuit, and we’re handling the investigation, and we’re leading the investigation,” said White.

The Michigan Department of Corrections may have had charges on the driver as they may have been on probation.

“I’m sure Southfield is going to be pursuing charges of fleeing and eluding as well as some other charges; the key is that we’re handling, and our fatal squad is handling the investigation because of the critical nature of the accident,” White said.
