Here’s why I am not satisfied with the ending of Weak Hero (manwha) and how I imagine it could have been

WeakHero Discussion
  • first, for me, it was a big mistake to let Donald win against Gray during the final fight. I know that Seopass did it to show that Donald was the strongest and that he gained so much power that even Big Ben and Gray weren’t able to stop him. Yet it’s a mistake because he let the antagonist win, and in the end Gray never was the main character. That’s the point : Gray HAD to win because he’s a coward as he says, he never begin a fight if he’s not sure to win. The antagonist just CANT win because he’s the antagonist, and Gray is the protagonist, the hero, he is Weak Hero. He cant be a hero if he doesn’t defeat the antagonist. Since the beginning, we knew that it would be the final fight and the author let us believe that Gray would win. In fact the end is in total contradiction with all the story. And the result of the fight is not the only disappointing and contradictory thing.

  • the fight itself was in my opinion, a complete failure. Remember when, in episode 111, Jake Ji told Gray “I see your real face” and Donald also told it to him in the beginning of their fight. I think I’m not the only one that believed Gray would go completely mad with his white mamba’s eyes, like during his previous fights. Even though Donald is stronger than him, Gray had to win because his weakness is his strength. Seopass failed about that and I am really sad about it honestly.

  • another point is that Gray made 2 big mistakes during their fight that he wouldn’t have done in any other fight. After he beat Donald, he turned his back on him instead of finishing him off. He never made a such mistake before. Yes I know, he was very stressed, there was also a lot at stake, and even if he knew he would win he was still surprised to see that he actually beat Donald. But his mental strength is stronger than that so he shouldn’t have reacted like this. After Donald got to his feet, Gray miscalculated the distance between them, believing that Donald's ankle injury would prevent him from reaching him. We know that Gray is very cautious and never underestimates his enemies, even more when it comes to Donald. So this is another contradictory thing in their fight. Gray would never have been so reckless, especially after analysing the fight between Donald and big ben.

  • the death of Donald by a truck is nonsense. I think there was no other way to end it but it was too early. Here’s why : after winning against Gray, Jake told Kingsley that Donald wants to be stopped but no one can do it. Then he thought about Gray and Big Ben and said that he was sure that they will be able to do it. It let us believe that de story would actually continue. In my opinion, it would have been interesting to see how the Union would have evolved after that, as well as the theories in the Shuttle Patch and the new order between high schools.

  • Also remember that Changhui, the leader of the second generation of Cheongang said he’ll wait for a moment of weakness of the union to take his revenge. Also, there was the leader of the first generation of Cheongang (we never saw his face). This implied that he would have a role to play later in the story but he never did. In fact the story had to continue because there are too much unanswered questions, and it would have been reaaally interesting to see how this battle would have changed everything, with Gray evolving after his defeat, ready to fight Donald one more time and to win this time.

  • The last point is about the unanswered questions and other things I’ve noticed. First the question we all ask ourselves is why Stephen didn’t contact Gray. Also, in episode 111, Jake also thought he would fight Gray later but it never happened and I think it would have been so good to see him fight Gray after the final fight with Donald by loyalty to him (as Gray lost the fight he may think that he has chances to beat him). Moreover I think that the girls could have played a greater role in the story. Some wanted a love story between Gray and the girl with glasses. I don’t think it is a good idea, yet I think they could have become friends, and why not in the same group. We also never know the back story of Wolf Keum and what happened to Gerard’s friends after the accident. And also the blue haired guy in Grays academy never learnt that he was Eunjang’s white mamba and honestly it would have been sooo satisfying to see his reaction 😂 I think that after another season after the fight between Gray and Donald, they would fight again and Gray would win this time. I think it would have been the “correct” ending.

Yet I’m not saying that the actual end is bad, that I wasted my time reading it or something, no ! Despite this disappointing and contradictory ending, this series is a true masterpiece, I enjoyed each fights and seeing how the characters evolved was really interesting. In fact I almost grew up with it, during my teenage to my adulthood. I’ll be honest with you, even though the end disappointed me, I actually cried because it was too hard to see a such good antagonist like Donald dying this early. The author hadn't yet exploited the full potential of his series when he had already killed off his antagonist! In my opinion, Donald became too powerful, even to Seopass and I think he didn’t know how to end it. I think he needed a pause but he could have done it during the series to correctly continue it after. Yet I understand that after 5 years of stress he needed to definitely stop it, and after a such masterpiece that I’ll read again and again, he is taking some sleep ahah (even though I’m secretly wishing he would rewrite the end, leave me in my denial 😭)

Waiting for the 2nd sequel that Seopass talked about in the afterword chapter :)

Oof it was long I’m sorry ahah and also please be kind because English is not my native language and I’m not really good at it so I’m sure that I look extreme in what I said 😅 Hope that it’s still clear.

i think i understand why the author let gray lose, but i think there could've been so much more after donalds death, like gray somehow taking over the union (?) or some sort and introducing new characters, i was actually surprised that it ended how it ended since i finished it first before joining this sub so i didn't get spoiled but yea, ending feels hollow

Yes !! I felt exactly the same

I think Donald beating Gray was actually a great part of the story. The protagonist doesn't always have to win, they just need to develop overtime and grow etc. And with the amount of focus on Donald AND Gray seopass was literally shoving in our faces that there's a chance that Gray doesn't win.

It reminds me of the boxer in a way.

I agree. I'm completely fine with Donald winning

The main reason I hated the ending was Donald dying so abruptly and also the fact that Stephen never decided to contact Gray while he was alive

I agree with Donald dying so quick, there could've been a lot with cheongang but it's safe to say that these were concepts that were definitely going to be explored if seopass wasn't deadset on ending it right there. Also i'm not sure since i haven't read the ending for a long time but i assumed Stephen had amnesia and that's why he never tried to contact Gray.

I realized i didn't properly elaborate on my opinions of Cheongang. I meant to say that the way the story was currently set i felt like there was definitely plans to continue the story, at least following following Donald, but seopass couldn't invest the time into it.

I feel like the artist was sick or smthn becaue I vaguely remember hearing that somwhere.
