Happy Mother's Day to all Moms, have a great weekend!  🌹🌹🌹

On April 20 hubby and I flew from Baltimore-Washington Airport to Phoenix Arizona, it was a fly-drive trip. Arriving in Phoenix we picked up our rental car and drove 6 hours to Page Arizona for the start of our vacation. Thinking back on this it was a mistake to fly for 5 plus hours and then drive for another 6 hours with little to eat.  On our first full day in Page, we had reservations for the Upper Antelope Canyon tour. Hubby had a low blood sugar episode before he could eat breakfast. He was fine after the EMT's, hotel worker Suzie and a guest who was a nurse checked him over and the orange juice was very helpful. So, I ended going on the tour and hubby stayed back at the hotel resting.

1. We reserved a Navajo guided tour through the slot canyon called Upper Antelope Canyon

It was nice they refunded my hubby's ticket price since he could not make the tour.  It was upsetting since it was a highlight of the vacation for me and hubby. Below are some photos from the tour, the tour was only a total of 3/4 mile walk.

2. Supposedly there are 28 reptile species, we saw lots of lizards on this trip.

3. The White-faced Ibis look similar to the Glossy Ibis. I took this photo from the tour guide vehicle. The birds were on the grounds of a high school.

4. I tried to crop this photo for a closer look at the White-faced Ibis.

5. The Carl Hayden Visitor Center, Lake Powell and Glen Canyon Dam

6. Lake Powell and Glen Canyon Dam, we missed seeing the wildlife in this canyon area. I would have loved to see the Bighorn Sheep. The visitor sign says there are hundreds of plants and animals living in this wild place.

7. A male House Finch, one of the few birds I saw by the Lake Powell and Glen Canyon Dam. I did see a few swallows possibly Cliff Swallows flying around the bridge.

8. The cactus blooms were beautiful, I like these pretty pink flowers.

Our trip  and hubby's health improved for the rest of our trip. The weather was very hot at times, 103° on the day we headed south to Phoenix from Page.

I am linking up to Heidrun's Mosaic Monday  I hope you can stop by and visit Heidrun and check out the Mosaic Monday post.

Thanks to all my visitors and for your past and present comments. Stop back to see any replies to your comments. I appreciate everyone who loves and respects wildlife. Thank you for linking up a critter post.

it was relief to know you guys were together in rest of the trip once he felt better . I agree that the 6 hour drive after five hour flight can be tiring for people of our age my friend .

  15. Hello Eileen :=)
The Upper Antelope Canyon has to seen to be believed as it's almost other worldly. What phenomenal rock formations and the sun shining on the curves and cracks makes it look like a wonderful piece of art work. It's such a shame your hubby was not well enough to join you.An episode like he had is very draining and he was wise not to exert himself and to keep out of the sun. I had a friend who also suffered from low blood sugar, and he usually carried sweets in his pocket, but on occasion he didn't, and became really ill. We searched for something sweet, and eventually bought a some chocolate which seemed to help. It was nice of the company to refund the money but only fair.
Spectacular images of the river and Dam and full marks for spotting the ID of the White-faced Ibis from so far away. I didn't know what they were, but recognised the House Finch.:)Thank you Eileen for such an interesting post, and also for hosting
    Saturday's Critters.
    Have a lovely weekend
    All the best

  16. Oh, what a shame, dear Eileen, that your hubby couldn't go on the Antelope Canyon tour!!!
By the way, we were also in this area in March of this year! But we drove past Page - because we had already seen Antelope Canyon, Lake Powell and Glen Canyon Dam on our first trip to the southwest of the USA in 2012 - Click to see more: https://rostrose.blogspot.com/ 2013/02/usa-10-day-page-lake-powell-antelope.html
This year it was the turn of other attractions such as Monument Valley, Arches NP etc. (That was our reason for coming to this area again - and I think you now have a reason like that too! ;-) Maybe around "Balloon day"! And next time please both eat properly!!!)
By the way, we didn't see the Bighorn Sheep either, neither in 2012 nor in 2024 and generally very little wildlife in Arizona / Utah (apart from Antelope Island near Salt Lake City)... I'm glad that you at least saw the ibises, lizards and the pretty one House finch! And I'm VERY glad your husband was fine again!
    Happy Mother's Day!
Hugs and all the best from Austria, Traude

  19. As others shared, I'll add my sadness that your hubby was feeling "less than" and missed some of the tour. The canyon pics are beautiful, as cactus, and the capture of birds that were to be found! Any wild critters are often tucked away in the heat of the day, so I'm glad you saw those lizards at least. So sorry to hear about your husband's low blood sugar, but glad he recovered.
The photos are stunning, especially of the canyon and cactus blooms.
    Happy Mother's Day, Eileen!

  49. Beautiful! We were supposed to see the slot canyons during the pandemic, but the reservation tours were closed. I still want to visit the Lake Powell area. Soon, hopefully.

  52. Hi Eileen -- I am always so late commenting and I apologize (I always seem to link when I'm too tired to type anything, but then when I come back to comment it gives me a good excuse to look at your beautiful posts again! And this one was definitely amazing. We've been to all the National Parks in Utah and Arizona camped all over both states, but were never been able to visit Antelope Canyon. I'm pretty sure neither of us could do that hike now, so it has to be one of the things we missed; we just have to be grateful for all we did see of this beautiful country. I'm glad your hubby recovered completely, we've had times when Bill couldn't do one of the tours and it' was disappointing but it wasn't one that had been so specially scheduled -- I'm glad you went anyway (I've always felt bad doing that when he couldn't but we were always both glad afterwards that I went anyway just as I know you were.) Anyway, thank you as always for all you do blogging and for this great tour. Looking forward to your Arizona birds!

    1. Thank you Sallie, for your link and for the comment. We planned this trip back in December and paid for the tour.
We were both looking forward to seeing this slot canyon. Hubby did insist on me going on the tour, thankfully he was feeling better before I had to leave. I would not have gone and leave him behind if he was still feeling bad. It is a beautiful area to tour, the national parks are wonderful. Take care, enjoy your day and the week ahead.
