Weekend Open Thread

| May 10, 2024 | 63 Comments

One topic that got people on social media talking involved a question regarding a woman’s either encountering a bear in the woods, or encountering a man she didn’t know in the woods. Most women apparently would chose encountering the bear in the woods over encountering a man they didn’t know. This is an indicator that way too many people don’t understand the true dangers that nature holds. Enjoy your weekend!

A bear or man? Change that to a bear or a woman. I would rather meet a bear in the woods. A good can of bear spray or my .44mag and the problem is over. Meet a woman and the accusations fly and you could be facing fines or life in jail time. Possibly even be accused of falsifying a hush money payment to make it go away. If you see a woman in the woods my advice would be…..run run fast and run some more!

This is a new kind of stolen valor. We’re gonna have to look out for these days.

Have a good weekend all you retarded fuck wads.

Commissioner Wretched

Congrats once again to the King of Battle for his FIRSTness this week. Keep the throne tidy, King … I plan to be in contention for it next week. The trivia column was delayed by the internet outage in my AO and by the fact that I’m part of the cast of a play in a nearby town, and we had a show tonight. So enough with the excuses; let’s get to the fun. ID YOU KNOW…? Did a well-known television personality threaten to sue a cartoon producer over the use of his name? By Commissioner Wretched didyouknowcolumn@gmail.com Not long ago, I received an e-mail from a regular reader of the column who stated her belief that I “have a lot of fun doing this stuff.” She’s right. I do have a lot of fun doing this stuff. As most of my regular readers know, I am a retired history teacher, and learning new and exciting things was a necessity in my former profession. I’m glad to have had the chance to continue doing that in my current newspaper career, and it’s been said that by bringing these items to you, I’m continuing my educational career. If that is indeed the case, then maybe I shouldn’t call myself a “retired” teacher. Nah, I enjoy being retired from teaching. I also enjoy bringing new trivia to you, so let’s dive into this week’s assortment right now! Did you know … … an oft-quoted line from a classic shark movie was ad-libbed – and had nothing to do with the story? Most of us are familiar with the line, “You’re gonna need a bigger boat,” from the 1975 movie Jaws. Uttered by actor Roy Scheider (1932-2008), the line was an ad-lib when he recoiled from the giant mechanical shark, having seen it in action for the first time. But Scheider was not referring directly to the shark when he said the line. The actor was instead adding his voice to a behind-the-scenes joke among the movie’s crew … they thought they would need a larger boat to carry all the production equipment needed. (A bigger boat… Read more »

… the word cookie comes to us from the Dutch? “Cookie” is a corruption of the Dutch word koekje, which means “small cake.” Koek is the word for “cake” in that language. (I hope I don’t get in dutch for telling you that.)

… a noted actor held the highest security clearance in the United States? From 1983 to 1989, actor Charlton Heston (1923-2008) held the highest nuclear weapon security clearance, the “Q clearance,” because he was the narrator of top-secret educational films for the Department of Energy. (Of course the actor who played Moses had a high clearance.)

… being a Major League Baseball player hasn’t always been a lucrative profession? For instance, when the first World Series games were played in 1903, Cy Young (1867-1955), probably the greatest pitcher the game has ever seen, wasn’t just starting for the Boston Americans (later called the Red Sox) against the Pittsburgh Pirates, he was also selling tickets to the game at the Huntington Avenue Baseball Grounds, home of the Americans. (If he autographed the tickets, that’d be the topper!)

… you may have seen a ratite? Don’t worry, you’re not the only one who’s done so, as ratites are not rare at all. A ratite is a flightless bird, one that has a flat breastbone with no flight muscles connected to it. Ostriches, emus, kiwis and moas are all ratites. (So is a bird who’s lost his pilot’s license.)

Hate_me

While many other ratites are pretty common, it would be exceedingly (unbelievably) rare to claim to have seen a moa.

Commissioner Wretched

True that. I think I was getting carried away there. (Probably by a moa.)

Commissioner Wretched

… the producers of a popular cartoon show were almost sued by a celebrity over the use of his name? In the early 1960s, the cartoon program The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show aired a story line about a hat that makes its wearer the most intelligent person on Earth. Wearers of the hat, according to the show, invented the wheel, discovered fire, created radio and television, and so forth. The producers called the hat – a size 7 and 5/32 – the “Kirward Derby.” The name was a spoof on television host Durward Kirby (1911-2000), co-star of Candid Camera. Kirby, however, did not see the humor in the spoofing of his name, and threatened producer Jay Ward (1920-1989) with a rather substantial lawsuit over the issue. Kirby’s business manager talked him out of the lawsuit, saying it would only bring more attention to the show. For his part, Ward actually offered to pay Kirby to sue him – again, to bring more attention to the show. (“Hey, Rocky, watch me pull a lawsuit out of my hat!”)

… the first television interview of a member of the British royal family took place in 1961? On May 29 of that year, Prince Philip (1921-2021), husband of Queen Elizabeth II (1926-2022), was interviewed on the BBC program Panorama.

… the first attempt to assassinate a U.S. president was made in 1835? On January 30, 1835, President Andrew Jackson (1767-1845) was the target of a man named Richard Lawrence (1800-1861). Lawrence met Jackson as the President left a Congressional function and drew two pistols, but both of them misfired – a 1-in-125,000 occurrence, according to statisticians. Jackson then chased Lawrence with his walking stick, hitting him several times before aides dragged the would-be assassin away. (One did not mess with Andrew Jackson.)

Hack Stone

Cartoon lawsuit related, Jackie Gleason was heavily tempted to sue the Hanna & Barbera studio over The Flintstones (1960)’s resemblances (in animation) to The Honeymooners (1955) until friends pointed out that it might be bad for his current uacting career image and heavily tarnish his acting career (from then on) if he became known as “the man who killed Fred Flintstone” and deeply weaken his popularity.

And the Rocky and Bullwinkle episode Stokey the Bear was pulled from rebroadcast following pressure from the US Forest Service. In that plot line, Snidely Whiplash hypnotizes Stokey the Bear to start forest fires.

Commissioner Wretched

… two mammals on Earth lay eggs? Most people know that the duck-billed platypus of Australia lays eggs, but the other is the echidna, or “spiny anteater.” Four species of echidna lay eggs, along with the single species of platypus. (The yolk’s on them, I suppose.)

… penguins are black and white for a reason? Their plumage serves as camouflage while the penguin swims. The black feathers on their backs are hard to see from above, while the white plumage on their front looks like the sun reflecting off the water when viewed by potential predators from below. (Here I thought it was because nature ran out of colors.)

… a Dutch artist has devised a plan to save the world? Arne Hendriks (born 1971) has suggested shrinking all humans to a height of about 20 inches tall. Hendriks says his calculations indicate that humans of that size would only need between two and five percent of the resources required by today’s normal-sized people. Hendriks does not, however, have a suggestion of exactly how to achieve that goal. (That might do it, though.)

Now … you know!

KoB

Welp, CW, you done row row rowed your boat to another home run of trivia for us bird brains. But history teaches us that you do it so well. No gray area there, it’s all black and white and never a rotten egg. Good that you always keep a few under your hat for the next week’s column. Too bad we don’t have a few extry Jackson’s to put in that hat for you. We’re all suffering from “shrinkage”. A Princely sum that could be broadcast to all the cartoonish Kings and Queens of the inherwebz. Not playing around so let me show you some of these homemade small cakes I have in the larder. You may share them with Lois.

Stoke of genius that the Battalion Time on Target, pre-emptive strike took out the SLIC Site that controls your inherwebz provider with a Bull’s eye, putting a wrinkle in your Rocky attempt to lay claim to FIRST Comment. The other guns were firing a smoke screen to keep your 26 leaden soldiers occupied and obscuring the prize. Coulda sold tickets to that event while they were pitching around, lost like a butter bar on the Land-Nav Course.

Present.

Due to circumstances beyond our control, my brother’s procedure had to be re-scheduled to next week.

Mrs. GB and I really enjoyed the little concert tonight.

Hack Stone

Hack Stone had a rather strange dream this morning. In the dream, Hack was back in the Marine Corps, which seems to be a recurring plot line in Hack’s dreams. But in this morning’s episode, he receives a letter that was sent to him while he was in Desert Shield, and the correspondence has been floating through the Military Postal System ever since trying to catch up with him. The envelope was completely covered in forwarding address stamps. The kicker is that the letter was from someone named Pettaway. For the record, Hack Stone has ever personally known anyone named Pettaway.

Which segues into this anecdote. Hack Stone checked into III MEF in January 1997. He received a letter addressed to “Corporal Hack Stone” assigned to a unit in 3rd Marine Division, with the address of unit assigned to Viet of The Nam. It was for a High School reunion for a Catholic High School in Virginia. Hack responded to the invite, politely declining to attend because he was currently in Okinawa, and he was several months old when they graduated. So someone out there is another “Hack Stone” who served in 3rd Marine Division. Wonder if he is/was Director of Media Relations too.

So how about you? Do you have a letter or package that took years to catch up with you? How about receiving mail for someone else who has your name?

Skippy

After moving numerous times over the last 10 years
With 1/3 of our personal belongings being in storage
We finally have everything under one roof
I’m finding things from 10 plus years ago
That I forgot I owned
Mementos, things like that
That I totally forgot I had

Hate_me

No letters or packages, but some of my pay definitely took a while to get to me.

InbredRedneck

Well, there was the Dear John letter my girlfriend sent me whilst I was in Viet of the Nam. Between the day she sent it and the time it got to Dong Tam, I’d managed to get some OJT as EOD and earned a dust off to 36th EvacHosp. A couple of weeks there, then off to 106th in Japan but still no letter.
Called her collect from Tachikawa AFB and it cost her $150 in 1968 bucks to tell me what she’d already written in the letter. Maybe some poetic justice?

Jimbo

I sent two packages home with all my life possessions in at the time, from Udorn in 1975. Still waiting. Maybe they got lost!

Anybody here ever buy into the “ Klaatu is The Beatles” hype? Hack Stone remembers all of the kids pushing this rumor that knew it was really The Beatles. Even though Hack was/is a huge Beatles fan, for some reason he never actually purchased the album, and could honestly say he does not recall ever hearing any of their music on the radio.
