TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A Wesley Chapel homeowner captured the circle of life up close last week as a bobcat was spotted stalking a pair of cranes near a pond before the animal snatched a duck right as it took flight.

Video from Dmitriy Chaikovskiy shows the shocking moment unfold just a few feet away from him on May 3. He told WFLA that this was the first time he’d seen a bobcat in his backyard.

Sandhill cranes could be heard making loud bugle calls as the small bobcat inches its way toward the pond. The stalking animal pauses before going toward the water. Then, out of nowhere, the bobcat whips around and snags a duck from the air.

The bobcat held the duck in its jaws and turned around to face Chaikovskiy before venturing back into the wooded area near the pond.

Chaikovskiy’s bobcat sighting comes just a few days before a dead bobcat was found hanging from a tree in Safety Harbor. The dead animal was found hanging about 30 feet up in the tree on May 1.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) officials and non-profit wildlife rescue organization Birds In Helping Hands removed the animal’s carcass from the tree. The FWC will conduct a necropsy on the bobcat to determine its cause of death.
