CSK vs RR, IPL 2024 Highlights: Ruturaj Gaikwad's 42 Anchors Chennai Super Kings' Victory by 5 Wickets

A fine victory for the Chennai Super Kings as they play their final home game in the league stages of IPL 2024. They were on the money right from the first innings. Simarjeet had a fantastic game against the Royals and his three wickets helped them restrict RR to just 144 runs.

The chase was not easy for the Chennai Super Kings as the Royals put up a decent fight. Rachin Ravindra gave the hosts a good start but the spinners were able to showcase their quality and pull the game back in their favour.

But the skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad was able to anchor the chase and played a very smart knock to take his side over the line and boost their chances for a spot in the playoffs.

Sameer Rizvi plays an absolute beauty of a cover drive to get the boundary and put an end to the dramatic chase. Disappointment for the Royals as they have not lost three games on the bounce. Good fight but clearly there was a lack of runs with the bat which put them on the backfoot.

The CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad comes into the party once again and attacks Nandre Burger for the maximum. It was a shorter delivery and the skipper pulled it away for the maximum over the deep backward point boundary ropes.

Sameer Rizvi comes in as the impact sub for CSK. He gets his first boundary as he flicks the low full-toss by Sandeep Sharma for the boundary towards the mid-wicket boundary ropes. A crucial boundary as CSK’s chances of a spot in the playoffs hangs in the balance.

A big twist in this game. A mixup between the two batters here. Jadeja cut it towards the deep backwards point region for the single. Came down for a double but turned back. He was however obstructing the stumps as Sanju Samson threw the ball right at Jadeja’s back and the third umpire deemed it out.

Easy pickings for the Chennai skipper who has played a largely subdued role today but it makes sense considering it is not easy to bat on at the Chepauk. Goes for the drive and finds the boundary at the deep backward s point region for the boundary.

Ashwin gets his second wicket. The plan pays off and Ashwin gets his second of the evening and Shivam Dube departs after a quick cameo here. Was flighted that delivery and Dube gets the toe-end of the bat and the ball goes high but finds the fielder at the long-on region who takes the catch.

CSK 107/3 in 13.3 Overs – FOUR!

Shivam Dube finds the boundary once again and this time he beats the man at the point region and gets the boundary once more. Brilliant intent against the spinners which also happens to be Dube’s specialty.

CSK 102/3 in 13.2 Overs – SIX! FOUR! 

Shivam Dube connects the biggie here. Goes after Ashwin in the very first delivery of the over and swings it away towards the deep mid-wicket boundary ropes to put the pressure on the experienced bowler. Ashwin goes for the off-spinner now but too wide and Dube sends it racing towards the covers for the boundary as well.

Nandre Burger gets his first wicket of the evening and all that pressure built so far through the last five overs, has resulted in another wicket. Moeen Ali departs after a brief knock. Looked to clear the ropes at the deep point region but found the fielder there who took the catch.

Yuzvendra Chahal comes into the attack for his first over. He gets one pitching on the middle stump line and seems to have turned back away from the right-hander and onto the pads. The umpire raises the finger after the appeal and the batter goes for the DRS but goes in vain.

CSK 63/1 in 6.3 Overs – SIX!  

Nandre Burger is now into the attack. Went a bit short there and Ruturaj Gaikwad punished the pace-on delivery and pulled it away with ease over the square-leg boundary ropes for the maximum.

CSK 55/1 in 5.5 Overs – FOUR! FOUR!  

Daryl Mitchell is now going after the spinner now. Hit the first boundary in the first delivery of the over as he swept it towards the boundary ropes at the square-leg region. Another sweep in the penultimate delivery of the over, this time towards the fine-leg region.

CSK 43/1 in 4.5 Overs – FOUR! 

Now Mitchell goes for the slog and he gets it well. Picked the slower delivery there by Sandeep Sharma and is rewarded by slogging the length delivery towards the deep backwards square leg region for the second boundary in the over.

CSK 39/1 in 4.3 Overs – FOUR! 

Sandeep Sharma continues for his second over. Gets one on the pads and Daryl Mitchell just glances it past the keeper for the boundary to get going. Finely played by the number three batter.

CSK 32/1 in 3.4 Overs – WICKET!

Ravi Ashwin is brought into the attack and he delivers with the big wicket of Rachin Ravindra. Had a good start but was beaten by the spinner in this instance as he failed to capitalise on his good start. Was a fuller delivery and Rachin looked to go after it but mistimed it and sent it high but the bowler took the catch.

Rachin Ravindra seems to be in good touch today. Goes after his fellow countryman to score a boundary and the maximum. Picked up on the slower delivery from Boult and flicked it towards the backward square-leg region for the boundary. Boult then went shorter and now Rachin was able to make some room for himself and get it over the third-man boundary ropes for the maximum.

CSK 13/0 in 1.3 Overs – SIX! 

A fine shot from Rachin Ravindra as he comes down the track and plays the pickup shot to send it flying over the mid-wicket boundary ropes for the first maximum of the innings.

The Royals have their task cut out for them. Having to defend a below-par score of 142 will not be an easy task and the bowling unit, especially Chahal and Ashwin will be tested. CSK’s opening duo of Ruturaj Gaikwad and Rachin Ravindra are out in the middle and Trent Boult has the new ball to get the second innings underway. For the Royals Nandre Burger makes his return and comes in place of Dhruv Jurel as the impact sub.
