Love when autocannon/rocket sentry targets drop ships that are already leaving rather than all the hulks and devastators

While I agree it'd be good if sentries were smarter/actively cue-able, shooting down a dropship on the way out should slow down the rate at which they bring in new ones, or force them to drop at a some distance from you instead of right on top of you, for a few minutes.

u/Rocketkid-star avatar

Imagine having a targeting system for turrets. They could be automatic or set to manual. So not only would placement matter, your own placement would matter as well so you don't end up getting swarmed.

A dropship going kablooey is always a beautiful sight. The dropships need democracy too

I wish they would make the mortar target large enemies like the rocket launcher does.

It would be so much better.

u/ToxicDuckl1ng avatar

Yeah but it wouldn’t be as effective. It would be best if it targeted large swarms of enemies, that way the aoe dmg could be maximized

u/Ghostbuster_119 avatar

Eh... not really.

They tend to shoot ahead of them which is why team killing is such a problem.

Meanwhile they only shoot in three round bursts so it wastes 66% of the rounds fired.

Also the damage a mortar can do is kinda insane, they can kill tanks if put in a good spot and protected.

u/ToxicDuckl1ng avatar

Yeah but the second u put it down, 5 chargers instantly spawn on u

u/Ghostbuster_119 avatar

It's tricky but learning to throw them up on cliffs is extremely useful.

Chargers can't get to them and even the little buggers and bot will walk into the cliff trying to get up there.

It's very tricky though, take a bit of practice.

I used EATs to practice with.

i thought the mortar only targets teammates? i swear they kill a teammate for every 2 enemies they kill

u/Ghostbuster_119 avatar

Yeah, it's the way they target enemies.

They shoot ahead of enemies so that the blast hits them.

But if you're fighting enemies that rush for you... the mortars will land... at you.

i swear i get mad every time people bring mortars against bots because the only enemies it can kill are the ones that rush you

u/Monneymann avatar

The static field Mortar with the regular mortar solves a lot of the issues with mortar.

They only got against bots. The most of teamkills by mortar sentries are against bugs, because they rush to you into melee

My favorite is the sneaky bugs that the sentry decides to see last minute

psst, it's horde, not hoard.

u/ToxicDuckl1ng avatar

Shh, my feelings of (managed) democracy were too overwhelming when I made that meme. They prevented me from thinking straight. How dare you object to my democratic feelings?!

Report to your local Democracy Officer immediately for re-education.

Unless OP is sad about the mortar targetting their bug collection

Scavenger bug suddenly Tokyo drifting as fast as you can sprint, because it just knows the mortar is aiming at it.

I think what we all Want is a Thunder Orbital strike 🤔.

u/ToxicDuckl1ng avatar

Maybe, but what if we had an eagle-2 and eagle-3. An eagle squadron of WT fighters

I am convinced that the automated weapons will priority target the enemies near player character.

Edited

They certainly do, it's definitely intentional. Many weapons and stratagems are balanced around teamkilling and the sentries all have incredible tk potential. Gatling sentry continuing to fire while rotating comes to mind.

u/SuperArppis avatar

Yeah and how even when there are enemies in front of it, it will try to kill enemies around Helldivers. 😄

I love this strategem because you can place it in a protected spot, but goddamned if it doesn’t love to find my teammates

u/FailedHumanEqualsMod avatar

I love this crazy turret but never take it for bugs. I love throwing it down outside those bot bases with the high walls.

When the mortar has to do your job for you... it realizes it doesn't need you.

u/Laflaga avatar

Don't use mortar vs bugs. It shoots in a predictive pattern which aims in front of moving targets. When a bug runs at you, the mortar shoots you, or more statistically your allies.

Why is there a bug next to you when the mortar is out? When mortars are out you kite and shoot at long range. You don't arm wrestle the bugs.

Also, throw out an EMS mortar at the same time and go bet a beer while it cleans up the area.

u/MetalWingedWolf avatar

That’s why we use EMS in this household. You don’t join randoms and pretend like you can use the mortar sentry without risking a kick. I’m out here to make memories with teammates. Not have the shape of Italy show me what I get when I sit down at a restaurant once the extract shop arrives.

u/ToxicDuckl1ng avatar

lol. I didn’t buy the EMS mortar yet. Idk I have a feeling it might not be as powerful as the normal mortar

u/MetalWingedWolf avatar

It’s a recurring stun barrage. Helps slow enemies to clear them, then starts bombing enemies you haven’t even seen yet. Worst case it momentarily stuns you and your enemies, but they stop and you just slow down.

That and you can just dive out of the slow effect. EMS mortar is really good.

You only need like two on a mission, though. More EMS mortars end up being kind of overkill.

u/Dangerous-Ad9472 avatar

The ems mortar paired with the regular mortar is the shit I love to see at extract.

u/pythonic_dude avatar

And with 50% ammo upgrade both reg and ems last pretty much all the way until they are off cooldown (unless you get operation modifier ofc). It's insanely good, and so is regular mortar, it has immense drawbacks but it also has unmatched raw firepower.

EMS is better vs bugs than a normal mortar IMO. The lack of friendly fire is huge.

Standard mortar is perfect vs bots, but it's even better to take both types of mortar. They have good synergy together as the EMS field causes enemies to clump up, making juicy targets for the normal mortar.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I don't believe the mortar sentry targets enemies within a particular radius of its emplacement. So you could... you know, just hang out inside that radius and kill things that way.

u/ToxicDuckl1ng avatar

Yeah I could. But I usually place it to provide extra cover fire when retreating to re-group OR holding a position or smth. That radius is pretty small thou tbh

That radius is pretty small thou tbh

Is it, you're right. I think it's around 15-20m from my experience.

We did a level 7 "Kill the Bots" mission yesterday, a friend and two randoms. Not one death the whole time, shuttle comes down, we run to it. I didn't see a bot near us, They all seemed pretty far away so we were throwing a couple more shots just to pad our kills before we got on the ship, but then BAM! BAM! BAM! literally on the ramp of the Pelican, killed three of us. Damn Automaton hackers.

u/Psychii_ avatar

After accidentaly TKing my teammates and myself too much, I switch over to the EMS mortar.

Works a lot better since it does slow down bots and doesn't kill. Only thing is worse case scenario, you get hit ny the stun and an unstunned rocket bot shoots you.

u/Low_Chance avatar

Especially if you're playing with randos, and ESPECIALLY vs bugs, it's better to not bring normal mortar. EMS mortar slaps hard enough and if it hits you, it probably just saved your life.

More replies

This is exactly why "Mortar is for 'Matons, Cannons and Rockets for Roaches."

u/Titan7771 avatar

I’d love if after dropping turrets, you could interact with them directly, maybe give you a small menu for changing target priority or ammo type or something.

u/biggbruizer avatar

One thing I noticed is, that with its long range the bots will call a bot drops on the mortor long after i have left the area. A nice additional benefit.

Sounds like the turret correctly identified a bug collaborator.

Isn't the strategy supposed to be close to the mortar to avoid friendly fire like in HD1?

u/Alienhaslanded avatar

I don't bring those things anymore because they kill more divers than bugs and bots.

u/14_99 avatar

still love him, now i just treat bugs near me like a red stratagem.

u/B0bbyTsunami avatar

That’s why I rock the EMS mortar.

It should have a minimum firing range of like 30m or something

I simply don't use the turret that bombards enemies with explosives that kill you and doesn't check for friendly fire against the melee faction

u/jtrom93 avatar

Mortars against bugs * can be * amazing, but you really need to bring the EMS mortar along with it. For bugs, it's best to think of them as a single stratagem. NEVER bring one without the other.

u/-Nicklaus91- avatar

Mortars prio targeting the enemies closest to it first. Besides if you're taking mortar vs bugs w randoms you can only blame yourself for dying.

Even better when it launches a full volley at a bug that I killed like five seconds ago.

Edited

I am genuinely convinced that this fucking thing is programmed to aim specifically at the enemies nearest to a player and also to lead the shots. The mortar shoots 4 shells per barrage and continues to fire in the direction the enemy was going, i.e. towards you. So this stupid piece of shit is smart enough to select targets and to lead targets, but not smart enough to not TK because the devs think teamkilling is funny. It really should aim for the largest dense group of enemies.

u/Loud_Consequence537 avatar

Yes I know I'm that guy and all that, but it's a horde of enemies.

This is a hoard: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoard

This is true for all attacks in the game.

This game has this underlying logic.

So you don’t have to go out of your way to do it, TK is very easy to happen. 😅

u/Rafe__ avatar

horde

u/Ordo177 avatar

I do wish we got like a ship upgrade or just a change to priority targeting. Instead of turrets targeting the closest threat, they target the largest group within range.

u/MythiccMoon avatar

Sometimes there aren’t even living bugs near me but it still targets me

Other times there are tons of enemies and it never fires once

You don’t take mortars to a bug fight!!!

u/L0rdSkullz avatar

You should be able to program what enemy type each turret targets. I suppose that is expecting too much though

Teammate threw down a mortar. It works effectively. I kill a bot, run forward a few meters, mortar then fires. I run back past the bot I just killed, die to 4 mortar shots… It shot at a dead bot… I know I heard the mortar firing AFTER I killed that bot. It is literally the teamkill sentry, not even the gatling anymore

u/ToxicDuckl1ng avatar

Yeah, u gotta be way too careful when u put down the mortar. Does hella damage and clears out areas but it does give you a few kisses while at it

Avoiding it is impossible for me. Even while I’m on the move I still get hit by it. Only times I’ve survived is due to the shield pack

If I'm host and it's a bug mission and I see a mortar, I'm thumbing that kick button the moment I get teamkilled

u/Loud_Consequence537 avatar

Sir, please stop hosting games.

People keep bringing these on defense missions and I keep destroying them once the enemies are pushing too close and it kills/knocks us around more than it does the enemies.

u/Straittail_53 avatar

Why are you letting the enemy get inside your lines?

Some teams are beyond carrying.

u/Loud_Consequence537 avatar

I once got killed like 5 times by my own team during the first minute of a mission. And then some bozo TK'd me because he ran RIGHT INTO the bugs I was roasting with a flamethrower.

So yeah, it tracks.

One day. One glorious day. Probably not today. Probably not this month. Y'all are going to learn you can drop EMS Mortar and Mortar Sentry at the same time, and they go together like peanut butter and jelly on Defense and Evacuation missions for mortar and chill.

Let's be real here, that's not saving these teams on higher difficulty levels.

u/Straittail_53 avatar

Preach. I’ve run multiple defense missions when I don’t fire a single shot and have top kills. Just working stratagems and chucking stratagems.

If you drop a mortar turret on the tiny map to eliminate bugs/bots, I will shoot it after its outlived its usefulness. It's good for maybe a minute and then it's a liability.

For the love of God, if you want to use a mortar turret on that mission, take the EAS one.
