Police Presence on 4500-5000 Patterson

Just drove by a pretty big police presence with a house taped off around 4800(ish) block of Patterson. Anyone know what’s going on?

Seems kind of odd for the area. Hope everyone is ok.

Maybe they finally solved the c. 2000 murder at 4800 Patterson (I lived their for a couple years c. 2010 - did not find out about the unsolved murder in my eventual bedroom until a couple weeks after moving in)

From a Richmond Police Department facebook post 2.12.2019

COLD CASE SPOTLIGHT: The Richmond Police Department is still seeking information related to the homicide of Janet McCabe (photo attached) who was found dead inside her residence on Patterson Avenue over 18 years ago.

Shortly after midnight on September 5, 2000, police were called to the 4800 block of Patterson Avenue for a welfare check after a family member said Janet McCabe did not show up for work and was not returning phone calls. When police arrived, Ms. McCabe was found deceased inside the residence from an apparent gunshot wound.

Janet McCabe was well known in her social circles and previously worked at “Beyond the Fringe Hair Company” in Henrico County. Detectives have continued to work on this case and believe the offender is known to individuals who were in McCabe’s social circle of friends and acquaintances.

“For 18 years, the family and friends of Janet have held out hope that an offender would be identified,” said Major Crimes Detective William Thompson. “We are asking for the public’s help, especially friends and acquaintances of Ms. McCabe to come forward with information that may corroborate recent developments.”

Anyone who has information related to the homicide of Janet McCabe is asked to call Major Crimes Detective W. Thompson at (804) 646-3925 or (804) 363-8914 or Crime Stoppers at 780-1000

Yikes. WTF

Drove by at 11:20 and there seemed to be a body slumped in a hedge. Heavy police presence but no ambulance.

Drove back by a little after noon and there was body in a bag and a very distraught person being interviewed by police.

u/icb4kprogress avatar

Damn. Wonder what happened

I thought someone was possibly doing yard work and had a medical issue, but shots fired suggest something else. Hope they person being interviewed is ok

I live just a couple blocks away. I believe an older man committed suicide by gunshot.

How terrible

More replies

It was a suicide. He called it in right before so the police knew to show up. I live nearby and police came to ask if I heard anything. I didn’t even hear the gun shot because a neighbor is getting a tree trimmed so it was loud all morning.

I really feel bad for the family that lives in there. My heart goes out to them.

Made this burner account so I wouldn’t dox my other Reddit account.

How tragic. Thinking of everyone impacted including the first responders especially the one who took the original call.

Police called it a "single event" and that it's "contained" so take from that what you will but I don't believe we will be seeing anything on the news about it. Very sad

What they report on the news seems so random to me. I get more info from reddit, FB, and Nextdoor than I do from the news.

Suicides don’t get reported on the news

Well, not quiet, inside ones. Some suicides do get reported.

I remember that. Chilling for the neighborhood, and so sad.
