Looking for a cartoon to cozy up with the kids during the week? While animated shows often have a universal appeal, and Netflix just so happens to be a treasure trove for such series, there's one show that's strictly for the grown-ups: Archer - which has had 13 of its seasons added to Netflix's lineup as of May 13.

Rated TV-MA, it's a world away from your typical Saturday morning fare. So, if you're reaching for the remote with little ones in tow, you might want to rethink that selection. But why? Lucky for you, that's precisely what we're here to unpack for you!

Archer isn't your typical Saturday family affair. This adult animated sitcom thrusts viewers into the world of Sterling Archer, a spy whose antics are as dysfunctional as they are hilarious. From its witty dialogue to its razor-sharp satire, this show is geared toward a more mature audience, tackling themes and situations that might raise eyebrows if the kids are around.

Why is Archer rated TV-MA?

If you won't take us at our word, then perhaps these reasons will convince you to not let your kids watch Archer with you. The show is rated TV-MA (mature audience only) for several reasons:

  • Frequent Use of Adult Language: Archer doesn't shy away from colorful language, with words like "s--t," "bitch," and "bastard" peppered throughout the dialogue.
  • Mature Sexual Content: Throughout the series, there are mature sexual situations and innuendos, including animated sex scenes with partial nudity. The main character, Archer, is portrayed as extremely promiscuous.
  • Depictions of Violence: From fistfights to gun battles, Archer doesn't hold back on action. Characters are often seen carrying weapons like guns and poison darts, though without excessive blood or gore.
  • Themes of Alcoholism: The show frequently addresses alcoholism and binge drinking among its characters, portraying these behaviors without sugar-coating the consequences.
  • Crude and Raunchy Humor: Archer's humor pushes boundaries, with no subject off-limits. Expect plenty of crude, raunchy, and offensive jokes throughout.

In addition to this, multiple reviews highlight that Archer "earns its TV-MA rating quite well through use of crude language, violence, and sexual situations" and "wears its TV-MA rating like a badge of honor" due to the "graphic violence, explicit sex, and indecent language" present throughout the show.

The TV-MA rating, reserved for mature audiences aged 17 and older, reflects Archer's unapologetic portrayal of adult themes, including sex, violence, substance abuse, and crude humor, cementing its well-deserved rating.
